This has to be the most beautiful church I've ever seen -- the entire thing was simply breathtaking. The Romanesque church was built in 1221-2, while the Gothic church was begun at the end of the 13th century. The high altar was completed in 1477-89. The Church of St. Mary, or the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin (Kościół Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny [Kościół Mariacki]), has two completely different towers; the north tower was topped by a spire in 1478. The main church is open to the public, but many small chapels plus the back of the church are closed to tourists and reserved for people wishing to pray.

On every hour, a trumpet signal —-- called the Hejnał mariacki -— is played from the top of the taller of St. Mary's two towers. The plaintive tune breaks off in mid-stream, to commemorate the famous 13th century trumpeter who was shot in the throat while sounding the alarm before the Mongol attack on the city.
