This vertical lift drawbridge spans the Columbia River, joining Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, and was completed in 1917. I was having dinner on the river, keeping my eye on the bridge and the setting sun, when all of a sudden the light was perfect and the metal was gleaming. (More was gleaming in http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/image/63653087, but my husband and his mother liked this closer version the best, so that's what I went with.) Needless to say, my husband's family thought it was very curious when I jumped up, ran down to the riverbank and started shooting while my dinner got cold. There is a railroad bridge behind this one with a train crossing it, although it's a bit hard to see in this shot.
