The ATM Man (2nd place, Street Photog Challenge)

Ankara, Turkey

I have been seeing this man every day for almost two years when I go to work. He sits by the ATM machine across from my office and hopes for a handout, which I must admit I give him fairly regularly. He usually tells me what he needs: medicine, a book, whatever. I don't know his name -- I only call him "Amca" (uncle) -- but I do know he has a daughter. One day he motioned for me to come over and he emptied out his pockets and handed me a nazarlik (evil eye), which he said his daughter wanted him to give me. I was so touched -- I think it was his way of saying "Thank you" for my help over time.

I've always wanted to photograph him (and also interview him, to find out who he is and how he ended up here), but I've never had the nerve. Today I gathered up my courage and asked, and he said, "Yes. Now?" I promised to print a picture of him for his daughter, if any of them turned out.
