Hi Helen,
Love your photos. I have been taking photos of orchids myself. mostly in Malaysia. Have you tried using a smaller aperture when you use the Macro mode to take the flowers close up? I find it maximises the focus on the flower. Sometimes you can get all the leaves/petals in focus which looks great. Hope you don't mind the comment but I observed this after taking lots of orchids. I set up my A (aperture priority) on my S85 to F8 by default and then you just have to switch to that to take the Macros fairly quickly.
