‘Old’ Diriyah is gone

Tim was taken to a dinner in his honor in what used to be known as “Old Diriyah,” a small town near the ruins of a huge palace that has been restored and turned into a tourist destination. In place of the town are now restaurants and shops intended to attract foreign tourists (who weren’t allowed into the country until recently) and an upscale Saudi crowd. In a way it’s good — yet also sad — to see how much the country has changed since we left in 2016.

Never far from the desert, posted earlier:

Interesting to see the changes. I didn't know that they now let tourists in.

It looks upscale and opulent, destined to draw in the tourists.
