1991-2000

Harborside entertainment, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon

I finally found my print pictures of all the foreign travel we did while posted with the State Department to Yokohama/Tokyo (1991-95) and our first tour in Turkey (1996-2000), including to Hong Kong, China, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Israel, Jordan and Germany. Since we can't really do any vacation travel these days, it's a nice trip down memory lane to revisit all those places we saw so long ago.

The merry-go-rounds give a very nice contrast with the modern buildings.
I totally agree with Liz comments. (We have been in Hong-Kong many times in the early nineties, the last time a few weeks after Hong-Kong handover.)

PS I just happened to think this little carnival scene is kind of like Hong Kong Disneyland BEFORE there was a Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005. Love it!

Very pretty sand happy scene.

I've been to Hong Kong (Kowloon) many, many, many times both before and after and during this time frame. I'm amazed how much things kept changing. And undoubtedly still are. Frankly, I preferred "the good old days" when Hong Kong was still a British territory. Things were more laid back and innocent. This photo is reminiscence of the 90's before "the change". However, I must confess that I did see a Mister Softy truck (like the ones were used to chase as kids in the US) along the waterfront in Kowloon in 2019. So not all things vintage was completely gone at that point.

Hong Kong Harbor used to be classic, old school and really a sight to behold. Now, the harbor is shrinking because of all the added landfill for development. A ferry ride between Kowloon and Hong Kong is now half as long as it used to be because there is now so much less water. Unless it's a tourist boat, you also won't see ionic Junks in the harbor these days. I used to love seeing working Junks in the Harbor. They were iconic. Hope some of your photos show that.

Were you stationed in Hong Kong? It was a great place to once be.

It's now a totally different than it was when you were there. It's even more different (a shadow of what once was) from the early trips my husband & I made together over a decade before your photos. I still like Hong Kong, but it's so very different in modern times.

I'm going to enjoy your old photos from the 90's. This is a fun start.

looks like simpler, more innocent times, with emphasis on fun rather than artery-clogging food...a positive image providng a good look at the city..

This is an excellent reason for taking pictures. Memories can be visited again and again. I'll bet this great photo brought back the day to you with a smile.
