‘Big Charlie,’ Cairns

One last picture from Hartley's Croc Zoo, now Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures. This was “Big Charlie,” who died of cancer at the age of 65 in 2000. He must have been like 50 years old when this picture was taken.

From the signs I saw while traveling around Far North Queensland, there are a lot of crocodiles in its waterways, but luckily I didn’t meet any in person, so this is the only picture I have of one.

Neat shot! I wouldn't want to get near a hungry croc.

Nice shot, but I wouldn't want to be the one feeding it.

There are now safe viewing points for wild crocodiles on the Mowbray and Bloomfield Rivers. You probably need to be there at lowish tide to have a good chance. This is the Bloomfield River one: https://pbase.com/donfranklin/image/166093168 and https://pbase.com/donfranklin/image/166095560 .

I used to have a dog who would nip my fingers when I gave him a treat. I definitely wouldn't trust those jaws!

Yikes! A Crocodile Dundee movie moment. How many fingers did that fellow want to lose?

We saw several of them in the Daintree river, north of Cairns.V.
