Yikes

Tim took this at Lincoln Park this evening. According to a person who was in the park when it happened, this gigantic limb simply broke off without any warning, not even any creaking, at 2 p.m. There wasn’t any wind at the time. It crushed another bench, destroyed a lamp post and blocked the entire walkway you can see a part of through the branches. Thank goodness nobody was close to it at the time.

Dog owners have sort of an ongoing battle with the National Park Police, who constantly make people put their dogs on a leash or risk being fined. They’re generally not very friendly, but the woman who saw it happen said one of them came up to her and some other dog people and said, “OK, which one of your dogs was responsible for bringing the tree limb down?” Glad to know they have a sense of humor.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly
unsharp.

wow fortunately no people injured, it is a phenomenon that is becoming more and more common and where the cause is actually not yet known, it must have to do with climate warming and acid rain. BV

When a tree falls in the city and no one hears it, it still does a lot of damage. V

Great capture, luckily nobody was hurt, it must have been all the weight of those freshly grown leaves.

Yikes is right! I guess I'd think twice now before sitting on the bench!

That has happened with some of the large trees on my property on an otherwise calm evening.
