This house on East Capitol Street, sort of the “grand avenue” of Capitol Hill, has been under renovation for almost a year. It was built in 1896 and has 4,066 square feet with 6 bedrooms and five baths. It’s finally finished, and went on the market for $2,995,000. If you put $600,000 down (!), the monthly payment will be around $14,000.
When we bought our small townhouse in 1987, Capitol Hill was a mixed neighborhood with many questionable blocks in it. We had an abandoned house on the corner where drugs were sold, and I wouldn’t have walked one block up our street by myself. I was also mugged on our front doorstep. In the ensuing years, Capitol Hill has been almost totally “gentrified” and is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Washington.
We couldn’t afford to buy a house here now.
Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.
