Excitement on our block

You always hear sirens in the city, and always think they’re going somewhere else, but this evening we heard a lot of them, and they stopped in front of our house – four fire engines at one point. Nobody takes the threat of fire lightly, but on the Hill, if one row house catches fire, the possibility is good that others will, too.

A fireman told us that a neighbor smelled smoke coming from a unit in the first red brick house right of center and called the fire department. Apparently the owner/tenant had lit a fire in the fireplace and then left (!), except the damper was closed, so the apartment filled with smoke. You can see a ladder going to the middle floor as well as one to the roof a few buildings down. Finally the apartment was cleared of smoke and the excitement was over. He asked if we lived there, and I was happy to say we didn’t.

The District has a lot of problems, but one thing that isn’t problematic is the DC Fire Department. They are truly impressive.

not as good as these emergency services appear as if it was fortunately not so serious here, yet a spectacular event remains beautifully portrayed BV

FDs are awesome folks (as are all emergency people). Glad it turned out OK for everyone and glad the neighbor called it in - better safe than sorry.

Quite a bit of excitement with the fire engines, Helen. At least the owners apartment wasn't burnt out and only filled with smoke. Still I bet they got a shock when they came home...V

The smoke is much more dangerous than the flames. Good hot catch, Helen !. V

Very scary episode. Glad that the whole thing was nothing more serious than a closed fireplace damper with smoke but no fire. Nice capture of the event.

A few years back, our neighbor's very large home (at least 6,000 sq ft) burnt to the ground because the teenage daughter left a holiday candle unattended. We were out to dinner & came home to find at maybe a dozen emergency vehicles and 4 news station trucks; plus a lot of lookie lous (who gravitate to tragedy) blocking our way. The neighbor's house was also ablaze with blue & orange flames and thick black smoke. When we finally were able to get to our house, we sadly watched until there was nothing left of the neighbor's house. Still, I very deliberately never took any photos of that event. Because it was our close neighbors, the event was just too personal.

That was the day that I also stopped using all real candles in our own home. I will now only will use the "safe" battery run ones. How scary that your neighbors live so close that their foolish actions could possibly negatively effect your life.
