Astana, set in the middle of the Kazakh steppes

One last look at Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, from the hotel, although I just found out Tim managed to take more pics on the way to the airport. The buildings in this direction aren’t as interesting as others, but you can see the steppes that surround the city – a lot of nothingness all the way to the Russian border.

*****
It’s a pity that Tim didn’t have much time to take pictures in Astana because the architecture looks fascinating – I’ve seen it described variously as weird, wacky, mesmerizing, eyebrow-raising and futuristic – a planned city set in the middle of the Kazakh steppes (meaning in the middle of nowhere).
