Trampling survivors

These irises were planted in the tree box in front of our house years ago and have increased in number every year. They were just blooming and looked stunning one day, but the next day were literally lying on the sidewalk. I was told some kids and a dog were getting into their car and had trampled them (since tree boxes are right on the curb). I was heartbroken to see it so got some string and pulled them up and attached it to a tree, in the hope they would still bloom. It looked a little silly since they don’t grow that way, but this was the happy result.

I don't understand why they would trample them - what were they thinking?
