Storage for something

I don’t really know what these were used for, and I don’t even know how they would have gotten anything down there since it was the basement of the fortification and no easy access.

*****

Fort Washington, located in Maryland, was for many decades the only defensive fort protecting Washington, D.C. The original fort, overlooking the Potomac River, was completed in 1809, and was begun as Fort Warburton but renamed in 1808. During the War of 1812 the fort was destroyed by its own garrison during a British advance.

The current historic fort -- maintained by the National Park Service -- was initially constructed in 1824.

At least my azaleas survived the snow, posted earlier

Perhaps a below ground power and canon ball magazine? Interesting and well balanced photo regardless of what it housed. Vote.

interesting traditional details; I expect there was a route for carts, it is amazing how narrow cart tracks were

Intriguing and also wonder what the small holes up above are for.

a sensible use would have been as wine cellars....however, the military may have had other ideas..
