Great Smoky Mountains National Park, again

Another view of the Great Smoky Mountains from Clingman’s Dome. In the distance is Fontana Lake (thanks to Buz for identifying it).

The distant body of water is Fontana Lake. It is formed by Fontana Dam, one of the TVA dams in the area. This one was used to power Oak Ridge, north of here, where they worked to create The Bomb. It also supplied the power for Alcoa Aluminum in its heydays. The Appalachian Trail drops off the crest of the Smokys and crosses the lake atop the dam. From this spot, the view is into NC. Vote. Vote.
