Great Smoky Mountains National Park

We drove through part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to look at some of the views from Clingman’s Dome, the highest point in the park, the highest point in Tennessee, and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi, at 6,643 feet. It was surprising – in a national park -- that we got caught in gridlock when approaching the peak, due to people sitting and waiting for cars to leave the parking lot. Still, the views were breathtaking, and I wish we had had more time to explore the park.

Hint of things to come, posted earlier:

If this beautiful shot is any indication of how beautiful the park is, it must be something else. V

I love this overview of the Park - I have read so much about the area and its peoples, would love to see it for myself. V

A wonderful forested landscape. Shame about the crowds. (Coming at this from an Australian perspective - and a north Queenslander at that - the USA sounds like an awfully crowded, over-populated place. I value my quiet places immensely.)

a stirring scene...sounds as if parking options are inadequate in such an apparently popular park...no wonder with views like this...
