One last view: US Capitol Columns

One more picture of the US Capitol Columns, which I find such a surprising sight in the middle of the huge arboretum. I had to go way down a hill to try to avoid most of the people admiring them, but I figured this photographer was OK ;-).

These sandstone columns are 22 of the 24 that were part of the east central portico of the US Capitol. They were completed in 1826 and stood until 1958, when they were dismantled to make way for the east front extension of the Capitol, which is adorned with marble reproductions.
