'Northern Rockhopper Penguin,' by Denise Ippolito

“Northern Rockhopper Penguin,” IUCN Status: Endangered, Kidney Point, Falkland Islands, by Denise Ippolito, Brielle, New Jersey, USA. This image was the winner of the Birds category in the competition.

Ippolito says: ”While we were photographing a rockhopper colony in the Falklands, our guide pointed out a lone Moseley’s northern rockhopper. Because it is rare to see this bird, I wanted to get a closer look at its extremely long breeding plumes that separate this rockhopper from its close cousin. I climbed a rock-faced cliff covered with orange sea lichen, and after several attempts, I captured a portrait with a colorful background.”
