The Portland Rose Festival is currently under way here, and among the highlights are the US Navy, US Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy ships in port. These are the USS Russell (right) and USS Howard, two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, which sailed up the Columbia River from Astoria (although they are moored in the Willamette River). It was possible to go on board, but the lines were long and the security tight – you couldn’t even get near the US Navy ships because of a huge wire fence, whereas it was possible to walk right up to the Canadian ships.
Right as I was taking this picture, it started to pour. And pour. I’m no stranger to Portland, but I didn’t expect it to be this cold and rainy in June!
