NOTE: I‘m starting in the middle of the second trip to find the red sand dunes because this is what we went to see, although we did manage to find other things along the way, which will follow. Those are people on the far left, to give a sense of scale.

We have made two trips now south of Riyadh in search of the famous Red Sand Dunes. The first time we simply couldn’t find them, although it turned out we were going in the wrong direction on some highway. This time we made the same mistake but realized it soon enough and turned around, finally coming upon them. The dunes were indeed red and beautiful, despite the huge amount of trash that people leave in the sand; they’re also very popular with the ATV crowd.

Both trips are combined in one gallery since it’s all desert scenery, just on different sides of the Makkah highway (but radically different).
