Construction on Koutoubia Mosque, the largest mosque in the Western Muslim world at the time, was started in 1147. Its enormous minaret, completed several generations later, is considered a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. The picture below was taken on the run, so to speak, as the man didn’t want to be photographed (and is covering his face, although it’s hard to tell), but I’m posting it as I wanted to show what little more of the mosque I could see from the street. Unfortunately, non-Muslims are not allowed to go inside.
