How they stay warm in winter

This beautiful image is not mine, but was taken by Andreas Tille and was posted on Wikimedia Commons. I have read over the licensing information, and it appears that I’m free to use it (if not, I hope somebody tells me!). But I had been wondering how these horses survive the brutal winters in Iceland, and I think this explains it. Somebody had said their long manes keep them warm, but that couldn’t have been the total story!

They are amazing animals. It could be that their coat has evolved to keep them warm.
