De Gooyer Windmill

The De Gooyer Windmill (Funenmolen) is one of six remaining mills within the Amsterdam city limits. It was built around 1725 and was the first corn mill in the Netherlands to use streamlined sails. It was originally situated elsewhere, but a newly constructed military barracks was acting as a windbreak, and so around 1814 the mill was moved piece by piece and rebuilt in its present location on the Nieuwevaart. The lower part of the mill is now a private home, but its massive sails still creak into action from time to time. (after "Eyewitness Travel Amsterdam")

It's a pity the weather wasn't nicer when we finally saw this windmill. It was sunny and blue sky behind me, but it never cleared up in this direction.

A very typical city windmill, build high to catch the wind. A very lovely view.

nice to see the houseboats at the left as well as the mill....not exactly suggesting it, but I know people who wouldn't hesitate to bring the sky round to the front!

I loved the windmills in Holland! This is a pretty view with the harbor surrounding this windmill! V
