It seemed like half the population of Stockholm rides bikes -- all ages and walks of life. There are bike lanes everywhere, and if you're not careful where you're walking (like I tend to be), it's quite easy to just about get run down.
When we lived in Ingolstadt, Germany, in 1975 the small town had well marked bike lanes. The U.S. is largely backward in the bike lane department, yet biking is very popular here.
