Church of St. Paraskeva

The site of this small Russian Orthodox church, built in 1865, has a long history. In the mid-14th century, a duke built a church for his Orthodox wife here, on what had once been a pagan sanctuary. At the beginning of the 18th century, Peter the Great baptized a 9-year-old African slave named Hannibal, later to become Major-General Abram Petrovich Hannibal (1696-1791), the great-grandfather of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.
