Kraków szopka (Christmas crib)

There is a competition every winter of these Christmas cribs at the History Museum, and they are simply fabulous. The museums sells some of the contestants' work, and I really wanted to buy this one, but finally admitted (at the insistence of my husband) that not only would it be difficult to display (maybe 1 meter high) but also that it probably wouldn't travel well when we leave Budapest. It, along with many others, was spectacular; the scene at the crib on the second floor rotated and was lit by little lights. I ended up buying several very small ones made by an artist whose work I quite liked (who won the competition in 2002).

It's an amazingly beautiful piece - not surprised you were tempted to buy it. I'm sure the ones you did purchase are lovely.

How fascinating, Helen. Shame you couldn't buy this one and display it at home. But some smaller pieces is better than none at all! Love the colours and details.BV
