Battle of Mohács (1526) Memorial Park

The Hungarians lost some 20,000 soldiers in the Battle of Mohács. There are painted wooden headstones marking each of the five mass graves found thus far.

The Battle of Mohács is considered one of the greatest Hungarian tragedies. In 1526, after taking Belgrade, the Ottomans faced one final obstacle before reaching Buda, a Magyar garrison at Mohács. The Magyars were outnumbered three to one and at the end of the day, had lost the battle as well as two-thirds of their forces. After the Turks took Buda, they ruled Hungary for more than 150 years.
