I had read about a synagogue in Sátoraljaújhely that once served a community from which not one person survived the Holocaust, but we were unable to locate it. I was later told that in fact it doesn't exist. However, we did find the Jewish cemetery, which is a place of pilgrimage as the place where the zaddik (miracle-working rabbi) Moses Teitelbaum (1759-1841) is buried.
Sátoraljaújhely (pronounced something like SHAH-tor-eye-a-ooi-hey) is Hungary's most northerly town, located on the Bodrog River close to the Slovak border.
