Sommerfuglen har to generationer i Danmark. Ægget lægges på Syre og Rødknæ og larven fra 2. generation overvintrer.
Levested: Sort Ildfugl flyver mellem blomster og halvhøjt åbent græs på sandjord. Usprøjtede og ugødede ruderater i det sydligste Danmark er gode steder at eftersøge arten. For tiden er Sort Ildfugl kun fundet på Bøtø på Falster. Nogle af lokaliteterne ved Gedesby er karakteristiske ved at have høj grundvandsstand og bærer præg af at være både fugtige og tørre.
