The coastal resort of Withernsea saw a decline in it's popularity when the rail line ceased in 1964. It has a sand and shingle beach which is safe for swimming and in the summer months the sea is thronged with surfers, sailing boats and water skiiers. A pier was built here in 1875 but it was lost to the sea many years ago.
Withernsea lighthouse is interestingly built in close proximity to the houses that line the streets a few hundred yards away from the sea. No one seems to know the reason for this, however, it does add interest to the residential area. A market is held here every Sunday throughout the summer.
