Hi, Love the pics of St Marys Church in Cottingham, I was married there in 1982 then moved to Stockton-on-Tees.My Maiden name was Hinch. I went to Cottingham Rd Special School formally Open Air School, I left in 1980 and I think the school closed and moved to Bransholm and became Northcott. I would love to see some pics if anyone has any? Also the statue outside Baitsons Auctioneers on Anlaby Rd. Some lovely pics on here, greate memories xxx

My parents and I were wartime refugees here from France. A tragedy for my parents but maybe lucky for me who grew up bilingual. We lived above the National Provincial bank on Hessle Rd. then in Salisbury St. I last saw Hull in 1978. Thanks for the memories, you're a great photographer!

First of all - great photos. In answer to Shiela's post. I lived down (little) Wyndham Street from 1947 to 1958, and I rememebr Elliots Fish and Chip Shop well. In fact I was never out of there! I went to St Wifred's RC School in Saner St, just off Anlaby Rd. I don't suppose anyone has any photos or street maps of that area around that time?

Hi Anyone remember Wyndham Street off Argyle street. Frank Elliotts fish shop at the corner was always full, and Newnhams corner shop was at the Wenlock Street end. I lived down Crystal Avenue in the 1950s-1960s.

Excellent site!!Lived in Wyndham street(Lincoln Villas)from 1948 until 1958 and went to Londsborough Street school! At the bottom of the street was a coal merchant near to the railway called Arny Hawkins.At the age of 10 moved to Greatfield Estate and went to Hopewell Road juniors later Jervis High school Bilton Grange. Later married and moved to Leeds then abroad. Pictures bring back lots of great memories, Locarno, ABC Cinema etc; Any photos from these times would be grately appreciated...a real pity that the old hull pictures are no longer on this site

What happened to that wondefull football ground Boothferry Park? With those six huge towering floodlights. Are they still there? Has the council preserved any of the area around the ground? I remember massive crowds there, I have a relation whos ashes are scattered on the pitch. Wonderfull memories, any photographs of Boothferry Park?

Lovely pictures, brought back loads of memories, I used to live in Beverley - went to Hull often. Fond memories of the Kardomah cafe! Bladons, and Thornton Varleys! and Hull market, worked in Hull for a while, I remember all the ships, the docks used to be so busy...... I am searching for a picture of the Regal Cinema (1956 approx) in Beverley, anyone know where I can find one?

There are countless more views/buildings/places/ people to photograph. I hope you managed to include many more ie; The Avenues, Beverley High Road (some beautiful houses) Newland Park, Oak Road park and lake, Bankside, The Whalebone pub, The Polar Bear pub, I could be here all day, very well done.

I lived in Hull from 1941 to 1954 I worked at Needlers and Smith and Nephews also for a solicitor called Chambers Thomas and Co off Whitefriargate. This brings back so many memories. Has anyone any pictures of Constable Street School? Theres not much about Hessle Rd. I also worked at the Tower Cinema, and The Langham Cinema on Hessle Road. Love these pictures would like to see if there are any of Constable Street. homas and co.

Interesting trivia from 1941.The week of the bombing of the Cecil cinema in 1941 the film showing had been Charlie Chaplins "The Great Dictator".Aprox "2 weeks later The National cinema on Beverley road received a direct hit whilst also showing "The Great Dictator".The next scheduled showing of the film was at the "Monica" cinema on Newland avenue during which week a bomb landed on the property next door.Was Hitler trying to tell us something?

no-one seems to mention the fish and chip shops of hull very often . there was one down st marks street cant recall the name and greenland fish shop near lister street and cogan street. it was a man named nasser athraby that owned it . he was a arab and i married his son . hence the surname.my aunties also owned second hand shops ... aunt kitty down craven street and one opposite some years later and aunt irene and winnie down beeton street and then holderness road . they actually got another one further up holderness road later on . my uncle ronnie used to sell hotdogs around the clubs.my name then was ann joyce.my father was called bill and my grandad was tommy giblin they used to sell icecream for stevens.. does any one also remmember gus who used to go round with an icecream van. i used to go to st mary's school down wilton street . i would love to hear from anyone who did also.

any pictures of good old courtney st. school or courtney college we usedto call it.lived in kent st.went to courtney st. school fiftys to sixtys.remember walk to east hull swimming baths with school and passing penny down the line to the next guy to get little brown loaf to munchon way back to school but dont get caught or get the big t square accross the butt depending wich teachers prefered instrument of punishment was used example large running shoe. small rounder bat. t square.bamboo cane. i,ll leave to the people of the time to associate names.not to forget a well aimed board duster to the head maybe thats whats lacking in this day and age.also the bonfire raids to other streets to get wood and old chairs for guy fawkes nights oh! the good old days in canada now beautiful british columbia in the sunny okanagan but still fond memories of hull and old friends.heres to all those teachers we loved to hate but love also.

photos brought back a lot of memories for me. I remember the Skyline ballroom, Locarno ballroom, Regal Cinema opposite Hammonds and C&A's. I used to work in Parliament Street and walked many times around the very old part of Hull - Bowlalley Lane, High Steet etc. I have a few books with photos of old Hull, purchased from beverley.
