Nakalele Blowhole is located along Kahakili Hwy on Maui, following an incredibly scenic and windy drive along the coast and a short scramble down a muddy volcanic cliff. Large waves, particularly at high tide, force water through a hole in the lava shelf resulting in a rather impressive eruption of water. At its peak, it looked to me as though the water was reaching about 100 feet high. After seeing the blowhole at mid-day, I noticed that a couple of days later there would be a high tide right sunrise, with partially cloudy skies predicted. Sounded like a great recipe to me, so I returned, trekked through slippery mud in the dark, and snapped this photo as the sun rose.
