Mt. Hakkoda lies to the southeast of Aomori City. Every year the snow is so deep it blocks the mountain passes. In the Spring, snowplows manage to clear the pass; the snow at the sides of the road forms a "snow tunnel" - each year there is a ceremony marking the official opening of the road.
