Rice Park and Landmark Center

Rice Park has been a public square since 1849 and is bounded by the Saint Paul Public Library, the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, the Saint Paul Hotel, and the historic Landmark Center.

In 2003 several bronze sculptures of the Peanuts characters were unveiled in Rice Park honoring Saint Paul native Charles Schultz. However this hasn't been without controversy. The Ross Group, an 11-member organization that has been heavily involved with beautification efforts in Saint Paul claim the statues clash with the historic nature of the park and demean the presence of the park's statue of Saint Paul-born author F. Scott Fitzgerald. But St. Paul City Councilman Dave Thune says the statues won't get moved. He says Charles Schultz's characters offer a better image for the public to follow than Fitzgerald's notorious bohemian lifestyle. In September 2004 the final images, of Marcie reading a book on a park bench with Peppermint Patty in the background kicking a football, were unveiled by the Shultz family.

Historic Landmark Center is the restored Old Federal Courts Building and is now a cultural center in downtown Saint Paul. It houses many of Saint Paul's arts and cultural non-profit agencies. Throughout the year a diverse program of performing and visual arts and civic activities are offered.

From 1902 thru the 1960s Landmark Center served as the Federal Courts building in the Upper Midwest and was the site of many infamous ganster trials in the 1930s. However the federal offices were moved in 1967 and the building was slated for demolition. A determined group of citizens banded together and managed to restore the building to its previous grandeur and it reopened as Landmark Center in 1978. Today admission is always free of charge and is more than worthy of a stop whenever you may be in downtown Saint Paul.
