Polar Bear Plunge

"Freezin' for a Reason." The following photographs are from the 2005 and 2008 Green Lake Polar Bear Plunges held on Green Lake behind Little Melvins on the Lake (restaurant) as part of Spicer Winterfest. Several local businesses from around the region fielded "teams" of participants. Over 120 people made the 2005 plunge, raising over $30,000 for Special Olympics while over 200 people made the 2008 plunge raising over $40,000. The event is sponsored by the Willmar Police and the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Departments. In 2005 the air temperature was a balmy 33F (.5C) while the water temperature was 28F (-2C). In 2008 the water was 33F while the air temperature was 32 (0C)--the warmest day in months.
