The Young One

view map

I believe this was the nephew of our host when we were
invited for tea at a Tuareg tent just outside of Timbuktu. He was a smart
kid, speaking good english and translating for his uncle. He's never gone
to school, but instead travels with the family and will take over the
families camels one day. He walked us back to town because he was going that way anyway,
having to send his girlfriend an email before he left with the family into the desert
for another two months. He really seemed to like her alot and I wish him well.
It can't be easy leaving civilization for months at a time.

I acquired his email address, interested in the fact that he said he
would take me to Taoudenni (I inquired about this also).
For those who don't know anything about Taoudenni, see the link above, or read
the book Men of Salt.

Taken in the desert just outside of Timbuktu, Mali.
