For those of you who read about the Stellae fields in a guidebook or
picture Axum as a faraway town in the middle of an exotic land like
nothing you have ever seen before. Well, here is a shot of the Stellae
Field. The Royal Baths aren't much better, being surrounded by barbed wire
fence. As of the end of 2007, they had the fields surrounded by a
corrugated fence with alot of electrical wires and criss crossing the area.
On the other hand, they are doing their best to fix and preserve the area
and some of the carvings, as well as the actual Stellae, are pretty amazing.
What you are looking at here is one of the larger monolith's that has fallen
over and the Italians have also returned a massive one (which they cut into
thirds to transport). The town itself is very interesting also.
Taken in Axum, Ethiopia.
