An Afternoon at Kinderdijk

Windmills at Kinderdijk, Netherlands

The windmills that made Kinderdijk famous were erected in two building sessions, the stone windmills (6) in 1738 and the other 6 eight sided with reed covered from 1740. The windmills were needed because of the inclining land, that would make the land eventually drown. The land inclined because of the decomposing organic material in the soil, which was exposed to the air because of the previous build windmills that pumped the water out of the polders.... The water from the polder was put up in two sessions, each about 1.40 mtrs up. The building also provided the pumping of water at high river levels. The windmills still function, but their task has since long been taken over by more modern equipment.
