COMMON LOONS. This is the third family of loons that I've observed recently at Mississippi Lake. I had watched the adults for 3 - 4 weeks sitting on their nest, which was visible from the highway bridge. About the 12th of June, they had left the nest and I lost them thinking that perhaps the eggs had been destroyed. Just yesterday, the loons re-appeared not far from the nest area. I estimate these young to be about 2 - 3 weeks old. They dive readily and are even starting to flap their wings. (See next shot)
