Seven images entitled: "Lunch-time in a crowded apartment."
Top Image: Mom routinely seems to come to the nest at about 11:30 AM to feed the two Owlets, now about 5 weeks old. Mom never seems to bring lunch, but rather she retrieves it from the bottom of the nest, where presumably the previous night's catch has been stored. None of us has, to my knowledge, yet seen one of the Owls bring in a kill. We suspect that Dad, who we have not seen at the nest, brings the catch to Mom, whom then takes it to the nest where she rips it apart to feed the young. The left-overs are then stored in the nest for a lunch-time snack. In this instance lunch is likely a Cooper's Hawk of which I showed Mom swallowing the leg and claws in yesterdays posting. A balancing act for Mom as she gets on to the nest with the young having moved aside to make room for her.
Mom digging deep to retrieve lunch from the bottom of the nest.
Whilst Mom is feeding one of the young, the other amuses itself by nibbling on her tail feathers.
All bums over the edge. Note: Junior's short tail compared to Mom's.
Mom consumes the Hawks leg and talons which presumably the young can't yet swallow.
With lunch finished, Mom prepares to leave the nest to again take up her post in a nearby tree.
