Three portraits of a Long-eared Owl.

Top image: The Owl watches our approach.

The Owl suddenly opens its eyes and looks up as a chirping Cooper's Hawk flies overhead.

The Owl looks down at us.

NOTE: See http://www.pbase.com/image/124088818 for an update on my posting of yesterday about the captured Great-horned Owl that had been harassed to exhaustion by some 40 crows. The Owl arrived safely at the farm about an hours drive from Ottawa. Once there, it was released and it flew off over the fields and disappeared into the far woods.

Since late January, I've been hearing owl here late at night & always in the pitch dark. Even so, I never saw him - not until the other night at Midnight. He was in the road eating a kill. When our headlights hit him, he then almost flew into our windshield. Beautiful series. The top shot is my favorite. That really shows off his face and the big ears. Plus it tells me that I'm right in my identification of the owl who has unexpectedly moved into our neighborhood. Thank you for sharing these shots.
