Robert Johnson Burtt (1825-1906) was a Presbyterian minister in New Jersey. His father, also a Presbyterian minister, came from Scotland in the 1700’s. Burtt and his family went to Nebraska as missionaries to the Omaha tribe at the time of the Civil War. They were there for a number of years, but lost three children to diseases. After the death of the third child, they returned to New Jersey to a church there. The artifacts shown were given to him by members of the Omaha when he left. The moccasins were removed from the feet of one of the woman as they were leaving – he is holding them in the picture taken at his departure.
