Borchardt-Ballard in 40-63 Cal.

An original Creedmoor Sharps Borchardt that was converted by an unknown frontier gunsmith about 1890 to a mid range hunting rifle. It appears as though he used a Ballard 5 1/2 Montana barrel chambered in 40-63 Everlasting. The use of Ballard cleaning rod thimbles seems to verify the use of a Ballard barrel. The rifle appears to have a made up forend and at one time, the barrel seems to have been browned. A Winchester windgauge front sight was used and an early Ideal Windgauge tang sight was fitted to the original Borchardt tang sight base.

Looks like a Carlos Gove style cast forend cap.

The rifle sure looks like a Long Range action

Montana,5 1/2,barrels are octagon in shape and are in 45 2 7/8. This would appear to be a custom barrel, examine rifling to acertain by who. Certainly a lovely rifle, more research is necessary. I'd be proud to own it.
