56 Years - Memories: August '16

Apologies in advance if you have received this in error. if so, please inform me to be removed from the list.
If you don't recognize some of the names of the classmates below, well...
that's what yearbooks and reunions are for :
( KHS '60 & '61 reunion pics )

Please pass this email on to other classmates.
I'd like to keep this going, adding their responses to this list or one of yours...
as a reminder that hopefully for all of us, we have many years ahead to reunite again.

Hal Oshiro

Upcoming events:

75th birthday reunion(s) sometime next year !

Let me know of any other upcoming events that involves our classmates

AUGUST 2016 POSTS - posts, starting with March 2009, are archived in:

Grazie Signora Digmon ( didn't know you spoke Japanese ! ).
Yes, I do remember that photo and those great times.
Yes, I was your 7th grade treasurer despite the fact that math was not my strong point.
But then neither was english and history, nor all the others.
That year is when I got to know Norman, Ken, and Ronald... great guys and happy I did.
My friendship with Bing goes back to our elementary school days.
My how we've changed... well, most of us anyway and for the better.

Thought the same of Mrs. Chang, Pat, quite the professional.
Never the in-your-ear type, though it may have been warranted a few times with me.
Oh, I did have a lecture or two from her but never where I felt uncomfortable.
She was by the way, the one who questioned me on my one eyebrow-raising fluke SAT
score that was higher than Douglas Abe's.
Questioning and probing but never scoffing or belittling... professional indeed.

Thanks for the background update Harriet, I never knew where a lot of our classmates
ended up even during high school.
I've posted that photo mentioned of her and her granddaughter on the pbase website and
I must say, Harriet not only looks great but years younger than I know she is.

Charlene, Jeanette, Chester, Carol ( Andrade Gouviea), I've passed along your requests.

Spoke to Norman after Gerri's headsup and he again emphasized that there would be no
charge for his music collection and the DVD discs.

Carol ( Chock Tom ), appreciate your writing in no matter when or how often.
With nearly 1,180 selections, yes it is a DVD as that many selections is far more than a
single CD could hold... 3.64GB on a 4.7GB DVD disc.

Nuk, Vernon, you're both now on the list.
It's not just a good deal, it's a terrific deal.

As Gerri has noted, Norman is not only providing his music collection but also providing
the DVD copies, all at no charge... tremendously generous of him.
That means the cost of this great offer will now probably be just for the packaging and postage.
I'm guessing that will be just 2 or 3 dollars or so for a DVD disc in a plain DVD sleeve within
a plain DVD envelope plus required postage.
That will be up to to the reunion committee to determine as costs will vary with packaging
material, and postage to destinations beyond the U.S.A.
Then too, for those where mailing is not a good option and time is not a huge factor, perhaps
waiting until the next rennion or get-together for onsite delivery could be worked out.
Again, that will be up to the reunion committee to decide.
When last I spoke to Norman he had already burned 100 DVD copies and was planning to burn
100 more DVD copies !
Which means there should be enough DVDs for just about everyone on the reunion mailing list.
Much thanks also to Carl Yasuda who made the offer and will be the 'go-between' for Norman
and the reunion committee with regard to the handling of the DVDs.

I found our 7th grade KIS yearbook and there you are as our treasurer along with
Norman Taylor, VP.
Such fun Interesting old info at an innocent age.

Hi Hal,

Thanks to Timothy Choy for sharing his knowledge of Mrs. Chang’s background.
I remember her as always being a professional teacher, a great role model.
Also thanks to you for keeping this blog going.
I appreciated getting news from “home”.
I am also interested in receiving the music DVD that Norman has graciously offered
to share with us.
Please ask the committee to add my name to the list.

Many Thanks,

Hi Hal:

Just want to thank you for sharing the memories.
I had to laugh at the class picture of us as eighth graders.
Goodness, my name was even listed as Helen Higa, 8U3.
Nobody will ever remember me.

Wanted to inquire about several classmates, Lorene Goo and Joyce Ashimine.
Where are they now?
Lorene was my best friend in school but lost contact when we moved to "the country",
Wahiawa and graduated from Leilehua.
My dad started working for Finance Home Builders and worked on the Waipio Acres
subdivision which now has been incorporated into Mililani.
Coincidentally Elaine Ymas was my classmate in my Junior year at LHS.
It was nice to see that she graduated with you.

Also want to let you know that Clifton Yoshida was my golfing buddy and was part of
our golf club for many years.
Was sad to hear of his passing.

Have run into Caroline Amoy, Elsie Tanaka, Paul Teixeira among others that reside
here in Las Vegas.
Please let me know about the 75th birthday bash.
Perhaps we could see you then.

Much aloha,
Harriet Higa Jerviss

Aloha Hal,
Thank you for continuing to keep us updated with what's happening with our classmates.
Sorry I haven't contributed much, but thanks to those who write in.

I would also like to order a music DVD (is it really a DVD, not a CD?).
Many, many thanks to Norman for his generous offer!
Please let me know the cost when it's determined and I will gladly send a check.

Yo, Hal - I would love to have the music collection.

August 19, 2016

Yes Vernon, we have lost so many but will remember them well.

Mahalo Gerri, I'll gladly accept that 'kick' in the pants if the pictures and memories
make our classmates happy : )

Betty, Phyliss, Robert/Brenda, and I believe also June, I will pass on your requests to
the committee members who will be handling the music DVD offer for Norman.
I understand there are a few reunion committee members who are currently away on
trips as I will be for a few days, or will have a full schedule for the next couple of
weeks or so.
As such, and while details are worked out by the remaining committee members, your
requests can probably be looked at as pre-orders.
I'll find out more and report upon my return, but in the meantime do email with your
requests/questions as I will monitor and pass on those emails while away.
If I heard correctly, the minimal cost for the DVDs will likely be less than five dollars
to cover the cost of the DVD medium plus mailings.
This of course for U.S. mailings with mailings outside of the U.S. perhaps a bit more.
Still a great offer from Norman, plus Carl Yasuda has offered his assistance with DVD
burning and mailings and Cliff (Slug) Young offered to assist with defraying costs.
Much appreciated of these classmates but indicated to Slug that, to be equitable, perhaps
each requestor be responsible for their respective minimal cost for the DVDs.
If any of the other classmates haven't made up their mind yet on the DVD, below is a link
to lists of all the selections.
There are six folders within the link, click or double-click each to view.

That was very thoughtful of you Tim, I'm sure her family was grateful for the presence of
all attending.
Her difficult path to a degree reminds me of the one that Bing spoke of to me when we met
a while back for lunch in D.C.
Maybe she'll share that story again sometime in the future on the blog.

We were classmates for many years at St. Augustine's.
Though we were not close, I remember her fondly.

Hey Harold,

These class pictures are "kick", in those days at KIS, we would call you a "Sharp Guy".
By the way you look the same, must be your Okinawa genes.
Mahalo for reviving our KIS pictures to review and seeing all the innocent young faces.
Everyone looks so good.
I'm trying to recall memories of those days...can't seem to retrieve much, unless we can
personally connect together again before more time passes by.
Miss Sam Kipapa a lot who had an amazing vivid memory of many classmates and events.
You are always so helpful and thoughtful totally appreciated by us for all you do for us
KHS "youngsters".
Have a fantastic day.

Attended Mrs Chang's funeral.
She did set high standards which resulted in quality educational opportunities in the
DOE system.
She had also earned her Masters degree from Columbia University in NYC at a time
when Asian women were not provided such opportunities often.
She returned to Hawaii to teach and raise a family.
She remained a strong forceful woman even in retirement with high standards.
August 17, 2016

It's a truly unfortunate circumstance when we could locate another 'lost'
classmate only because of her recent passing, noted in an obit.

Not a classmate but I'm sure many of you will remember her.
I was not one of her most accomplished students, having barely passed her class
as a matter of fact.
But she treated me quite fairly nonetheless for whatever reason.

Mahalo Gerri, for the great assist in passing on the info re Norman.
The KIS classmates will remember Norman as our 8th grade VP.

Thanks to Gerri, I was able to get in touch with Norman and he clarified a few
things re the DVDs.
He is, quite generously, sharing his collection and also burning some copies at
no charge to classmates, saying that this was his contribution to the class.
He did ask though that the collection be for personal use only and not for sale,
or for commercial or other use.
I've already emailed some of the reunion committee members to contact Norman
and consider ways to assist him with distribution and material costs.
He sent me a sample DVD and I can truly say it is a very impressive collection.
Even after accounting for several duplicates that Norman cautioned me about,
there are still nearly twelve hundred selections.
Over a hundred all Elvis hits, nearly three hundred selections from the 40s and
50s, and nearly eight hundred miscellaneous selections from our Intermediate
and High School era.
While awaiting word/replies from the reunion committe, please do let them know
if you're interested in receiving a copy.
Knowing how many are interested would, I'm sure, really help the committee in
determining how to extend assistance to Norman with his great offer.
I'm guessing there might be a nominal charge to defray costs for the blank DVDs
and shipping/handling, much like the previous reunions photo CDs.
But a collection like this I would guess could probably run around at least a couple
of hundred or so, purchased online or elsewhere.
Anyway, let them know of your interest via me, Pearl or any other committee member.

Aloha Harold, please forward this bighearted info and offer to our classmates, etc.
Our KHS '60'S class just received a generous unconditional offer from an old
classmate of ours, Norman Taylor, whom many may remember even though he
left KHS briefly to attend Kamehameha School and returned to KHS.

Over the years, Norman, an avid music buff collected an extensive 1950's-60's
plus hard to find artists and music collection of over a thousand songs that
we enjoyed during our school era.
For interested classmates who wish to obtain your favorite 1950-60 music/songs,
Norman is kindly offering to "burn" copies of the music/songs on a DVD at no
cost, gratis, no less, no strings attached I am told.
A mahalo nui nui to our pal Norman.
