Great turn-out at the recent KHS Foundation fundraiser dinner, especially with the '60 & '61
groups who each had over a dozen classmates attending plus some spouses.

http://www.pbase.com/halinhi/khsff2015

Mahalo to all who provided contact information or good leads thus far for the missing classmates.
Several so far have been found or that we have fairly viable leads on, but as noted above, there
are still many more on that list with even a few more added on.

Done and posted Pearl - 4/9 & 5/7 Thursday meetings at 6PM, Unity House

Pam, hope your husband is doing OK and you'll be here in Honolulu in May.
And if you do make it here, do consider the tunnel tour.

Thanks for the good words and thoughts Virginia, will pass on to Elsie.

Thanks Brenda, I'll also continue my search for Karen and the rest of the missing.
The gals are the hardest to locate, even with married names in hand.

Mahalo Gary, have passed on the info to Pearl.

Hal

Hi Hal,

Don't know if I replied to this before but hopefully I'll be able to attend.
My husband had a mini stroke about 3 weeks ago here in Florida.
We'll leave for home around April 7 and have to take him to his doctors and make sure everything is ok
before I leave for Hawaii... if I can indeed go.
Will definitely let you know when I make my plane reservations.
Maybe I won't go to the tunnel thing although I know it will be so educational.
At least I'll be able to go to the get togethers to see everyone.
Take care.

Love, Pam

Hi, Hal!

Funny you should send me this email, as Karen Bertram has been very much on my mind, and I have spent
some time looking for her!
I forgot her husband's name; however, they did come here and if you remember, she was little, and he was
over 6 feet!

I have been looking in Texas, and there are 834 Karen Youngs in Texas!
Now I will check Dennis.

Thanks for who you are, Hal!

OK Pearl... Monday, May 25, 2015 KHS 1960 Family Potluck at the KHS cafeteria from 10AM to 2PM
There will probably be a sign-up sheet and more info coming but in the meantime let Pearl or myself know
if you will be attending on Monday and how many will be coming with you.

Pam, I was able to provide the gal with a f ew more school pics of Denis and her reply indicated at how
grateful she was at being able to know her Dad at least a bit more, especially since she had also lost
her Mom a few years ago and her paternal Grandmother before that.
I wouldn't worry too much about two pairs of shoes as the concern is wearing soggy shoes throughout the
day, but wearing slippahs, crocs, beach sandals, etc throughout negates that concern.
As for the 1,500 foot walk, the average city block is about a little over 300 feet ( length of a football field ).
So that would be about a little less than 5 average city blocks, and as I understand, with a fairly level walk.
But... there is an approximately one-mile walk to get to the tunnel, although there is the possiblility of
transportation being provided by the BWS for a small fee for that one-mile.
Keep in mind though that this will likely not be a military-style forced march but less hurried to enjoy
the scenery and listen to the guide as he/she points out things of interest.
There are restroom facilities at the Kahaluu park area which is a short drive from the tunnel area and
the tour itself I believe takes about 2 hours so a beforehand and/or after restroom break shoud suffice.
That leaves just a couple more things... if being in the dark for brief periods of time and/or if you are
overly claustrophobic, then maybe, just maybe, you may want to think a little more about it.
Still, should be not only a lot of fun but educational too.
Here's a link below to a video that will show what the tour is about and what the tunnel looks like.

Hi Hal,

Doesn't it warm your heart that starting this blog has brought so many of us closer!
Bless all of you who have put so much into this.
That story about Denis' daughter is so heartwarming.
I didn't know that he passed away like that - so sad for the family - but how nice that your wife talked to
the daughter and got you involved.
So sad that she had to wait this long to get some closure and to finally find out about her dad.
We just never know how we can help people by just talking.
It's such a small world.

I was going to sign up for the Waihee Tunnel Tour but after reading what that guy wrote about having
two sets of shoes and walking in water for 1500 ft... and no restroom there... I decided I better not do it!!!
It's a good thing that guy was so explicit!!!

Thanks again for all your good work.

Love, Pam

5/25/15 Memorial Day - family potluck/games at KHS cafeteria 10am - 2pm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

February 24, 2015

Don't forget the upcoming KHS Foundation fundraiser dinner at the KHS cafeteria, Saturday,
March 21, 2015
Above is a link to a pdf information and registration form for that fundraiser.

One of the accompanying activities for the 55th reunion is a free tour of the Waihe'e Tunnel.
This tunnel is one of many that were bored to capture percolating rain water in the mountains.
It's become a popular tour for people from school age to senior age.
Above are links to pdf information on the May 21st tunnel tour.
For those who plan to take part in the tour please inform Pearl or myself of that as soon as
possible to allow for time to include your name and required information that needs to be on
the multi signature Consent of Entry liability waiver form.
That form will then need to be signed by all tour participants before the start of the tour.

As per Richard Shintaku, there will be a golf event on Friday, May 22nd to coincide with our
55th reunion in Honolulu on Sunday, May 24th
Link to an informational pdf flyer with a registration form is located above.

Sorry about the confusion Pamela, I should have been a bit more clear on the various activities
and dates.
As such, and as you may have already noticed, I've posted all the relevant information on the
various activities and dates at the very top where they'll stay for each blog until they are
no longer relevant.
More information on the Honolulu 55th reunion at the KHS cafeteria will be available soon.

One more item I'd like to get to.
Remember a while back when a gal emailed me wanting information on a classmate who she
said was a relative of hers and it eventually came out that the classmate was her Dad who
she had never really known after a divorce and who had long passed away ?
After determining that she was bonafide, I passed on whatever info and photos of her Dad that
I had over to her.
Well... dejavu all over again... as someone once said.
At a cultural organization dinner this past weekend we sat at the same table as this gal who
happened to have a personalized water bottle in front of her with the name 'Oshiro'.
Noticing that, my wife struck up a conversation with her.
She told my wife that it was her married name then mentioned the name she was born with.
My wife told her that I had a classmate with the same last name and his name was Denis.
The gal then told my wife " that was my Dad ".
I had been turned the other way talking to family and friends when my wife finally got my
attention and pointed out the Oshiro name and introduced me to the gal.
She then said " do you know who her Dad was ? " ( of course I didn't... geez ).
" Her Dad was Denis Ikei "... an OMG moment.
As she told us, she had no recollection of her Dad either as she was just a toddler when he
disappeared and was eventually declared deceased.
For those who don't know or don't remember, as I recall, Denis was one of a fishing crew
whose boat capsized far offshore of the islands sometime in the mid 60s.
Without the kind of survival/communication gear available today, there probably was little
chance of surviving for too long or notifying anyone for help.
Denis and another crew member, the strongest swimmers, volunteered themselves to swim
back to shore to summon help.
Much like the Eddie Aikau incident, they never made it and were never found while the others
were eventually rescued.
The gal said her Mom and Grandmother never talked about her Dad or the incident.
Likely it was too traumatic not only because of his death but probably also because of the great
hardship it caused.
I remember reading somewhere later that Denis wasn't declared deceased for a long time after
the incident, just missing, thus his wife and family weren't able to depend on insurance or
other benefits for that long period... many years I believe.
Anyway, long story short, I gave her the link to the pbase reunion photo site as I knew there
were at least a couple of photos of Denis in there.
The gal had shown us 3 photos of her Dad - his senior yearbook photo, and 2 of him holding her
when she was just a toddler... the only photos she had of him.
She got that senior yearbook photo from a newspaper article of the incident when she did some
research at the library many years ago.
Told her if I were able to find more photos I'd post them or get them to her.
So... again, long story short... if anyone out there has photos or even a great memory of Denis
to share, do pass it on to me so I can pass it on to her.

Mahalo,
Hal
