Don't forget the upcoming KHS Foundation fundraiser dinner at the KHS cafeteria, Saturday,
March 21, 2015
Above is a link to a pdf information and registration form for that fundraiser.

One of the accompanying activities for the 55th reunion is a free tour of the Waihe'e Tunnel.
This tunnel is one of many that were bored to capture percolating rain water in the mountains.
It's become a popular tour for people from school age to senior age.
Above are links to pdf information on the May 21st tunnel tour.
For those who plan to take part in the tour please inform Pearl or myself of that as soon as
possible to allow for time to include your name and required information that needs to be on
the multi signature Consent of Entry liability waiver form.
That form will then need to be signed by all tour participants before the start of the tour.

As per Richard Shintaku, there will be a golf event on Friday, May 22nd to coincide with our
55th reunion in Honolulu on Sunday, May 24th
Link to an informational pdf flyer with a registration form is located above.

Sorry about the confusion Pamela, I should have been a bit more clear on the various activities
and dates.
As such, and as you may have already noticed, I've posted all the relevant information on the
various activities and dates at the very top where they'll stay for each blog until they are
no longer relevant.
More information on the Honolulu 55th reunion at the KHS cafeteria will be available soon.

One more item I'd like to get to.
Remember a while back when a gal emailed me wanting information on a classmate who she
said was a relative of hers and it eventually came out that the classmate was her Dad who
she had never really known after a divorce and who had long passed away ?
After determining that she was bonafide, I passed on whatever info and photos of her Dad that
I had over to her.
Well... dejavu all over again... as someone once said.
At a cultural organization dinner this past weekend we sat at the same table as this gal who
happened to have a personalized water bottle in front of her with the name 'Oshiro'.
Noticing that, my wife struck up a conversation with her.
She told my wife that it was her married name then mentioned the name she was born with.
My wife told her that I had a classmate with the same last name and his name was Denis.
The gal then told my wife " that was my Dad ".
I had been turned the other way talking to family and friends when my wife finally got my
attention and pointed out the Oshiro name and introduced me to the gal.
She then said " do you know who her Dad was ? " ( of course I didn't... geez ).
" Her Dad was Denis Ikei "... an OMG moment.
As she told us, she had no recollection of her Dad either as she was just a toddler when he
disappeared and was eventually declared deceased.
For those who don't know or don't remember, as I recall, Denis was one of a fishing crew
whose boat capsized far offshore of the islands sometime in the mid 60s.
Without the kind of survival/communication gear available today, there probably was little
chance of surviving for too long or notifying anyone for help.
Denis and another crew member, the strongest swimmers, volunteered themselves to swim
back to shore to summon help.
Much like the Eddie Aikau incident, they never made it and were never found while the others
were eventually rescued.
The gal said her Mom and Grandmother never talked about her Dad or the incident.
Likely it was too traumatic not only because of his death but probably also because of the great
hardship it caused.
I remember reading somewhere later that Denis wasn't declared deceased for a long time after
the incident, just missing, thus his wife and family weren't able to depend on insurance or
other benefits for that long period... many years I believe.
Anyway, long story short, I gave her the link to the pbase reunion photo site as I knew there
were at least a couple of photos of Denis in there.
The gal had shown us 3 photos of her Dad - his senior yearbook photo, and 2 of him holding her
when she was just a toddler... the only photos she had of him.
She got that senior yearbook photo from a newspaper article of the incident when she did some
research at the library many years ago.
Told her if I were able to find more photos I'd post them or get them to her.
So... again, long story short... if anyone out there has photos or even a great memory of Denis
to share, do pass it on to me so I can pass it on to her.

Mahalo,
Hal

Pearl, Hal,

Here’s the golf flyer.
Event is scheduled for Friday 22 May at Olomana GC.
Note the check payment date to me of 25 March.
The reason for the early cutoff is Andy, Carl and I will be out of town for long periods in April.
But please let golfers know that we will accept players up until mid May.
They can pay at that time.
I will also send out flyer to the golfers who played the last tournament.

Thank you.
Shinty

Aloha Pearl:
MAHALO for your continued patience, and my apologies for the delay in replying to your phone
messages, being a short work week and busy tour schedule, kept me out of the office more than
in this week.

Attached, please find your group’s tour confirmation information.
It provides you with tour highlights, security and dress code requirements, group manifest form,
and driving map/instructions.
Two additional attachments include our Consent of Entry Liability Waiver and multi-signature page
forms.
Please review the information carefully.

Although the following information is provided in the attachments, there are a couple of things I
would like to highlight.
There are a couple of requirements that we will ask of you.
The first requirement – a complete name list of all tour participants must be submitted no later than
one week prior to tour date.
All adults (18 years and older) must provide their FULL (First/Last) NAME and HOME ADDRESS
(street, city, zip code – no P.O. boxes).

The second requirement, all tour participants must sign our Consent of Entry (liability waiver) form.
I have provided you with the “legal form” that you will sign on behalf of your group.
IF (and only IF) it is convenient for you, please have everyone complete and sign ahead of time
and bring completed form with you on tour day.
IF it NOT convenient for everyone to sign ahead of time, NO PROBLEM, we will have everyone sign
the Consent of Entry on tour day.

Dress code is comfortable and casual.
Please ensure that everyone is properly prepared for the tour, especially the tunnel walk.
Information provided states that we recommend two pairs of footwear – one for the 1-mile walk/hike
to/from tunnel site; the second pair of footwear for the tunnel walk.
The 1,500-feet tunnel walk is in 1”-2” of water the entire way.
Bring a flashlight and an empty water container (no glass) for a take home souvenir.
It is also recommended to bring a rain jacket/poncho, insect repellent, an extra t-shirt and/or towel.
There will be a vehicle to lock extra bags/stuff in while the group is in the tunnel.

We can discuss the possibility of having a couple of vehicles (2-3) drive in the access road to tunnel site.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There are no restrooms at tunnel site.
Nearest restrooms are located at Kahalu’u Regional Park at the beginning of Waihe’e Road as you turn
off Kamehameha Hwy.
You may want to arrange meeting your group at the park for last chance restroom and ensuring everyone
is gathered before heading up to the meeting point at the end of Waihe’e Road.

Let me know if you have any further questions, comments or concerns.
MAHALO!

Well, that still means you'll be able to go to the Honolulu 55th reunion, right ?
That will be on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at the KHS cafeteria.
Same venue as the KHSF fundraiser dinner in March.
Hope to see you there !

Ooops ! Apologies... at this past reunion committee meeting I was corrected on the LV reunion date.
It will be on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at the Main Street Station Hotel & Casino banquet room.
The following day by the way, a Monday, is Columbus Day... a holiday for many.

A few more details on the Sunday, May 24, 2015 reunion coming soon on the next blog.

Also, don't forget to register for the upcoming Kaimuki High School Foundation fundraiser dinner.
That will be held at the KHS cafeteria on Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 4:30P to 8:30P
There is a pdf registration form attached to this email for your convenience.

February 15, 2015

Have been out of town the last couple of weeks so this is the first email blog since January 17.
Dropping by the last reunion committee meeting I observed that the committee this year is extremely
short-handed and needs many more classmates to step forward.
This upcoming meeting during the day ( 2/17/15, 11AM ) at Jade Dynasty Restaurant may make it
easier for some to attend and help out.
If so, please inform Pearl of your intention to possibly plan for seating.
Also, please encourage other classmates to do the same.
These upcoming reunions in Honolulu and Las Vegas could very well be the last ones attended by
some of our classmates, depending on physical, mental, spiritual or financial state of being.
So it's important for not only as many as possible to attend but also to assist in whatever way.

Audrey BJ Young Kwock as she was known back in 1991 is more than likely the same as noted in
the Star-Advetiser obit.
Our condolences to her family
