There was a terrific turnout of around 30 KHS '60 and '61 schoolmates at the KHSF fundraiser dinner.
Plus a sprinkling of other years' of familiar schoolmates who sat among or nearby to us.
Great conversation, fun and good entertainment highlighted by Mel Cabang's 'flashlight' and other routines.
It was the first time for me being in the KHS Center for the Arts performance hall.
Though now showing it's age after a couple of decades or so of performances, it's still really nice.
Hope the rest of you don't miss out again and will attend next year's fundraiser dinner.

More fun times at another get-together... thanks Gerri for setting it up.

Sorry I wasn't able to attend the KHS fund raiser.
I am in San Francisco after driving from Tucson last week to be here for my mother-in-law's 91 birthday and
Merlin and my twenty third anniversary.
We flew in to Phoenix March 6 and spent a couple of days at my Tucson home before driving to San Francisco.
We will be driving back to Tucson this friday and then fly to Hilo from Phoenix.
Also just found out my brother Joseph just passed yesterday and with little expectation.
I shall miss him very much.
Out of eight of us siblings my brother Moses and I are here serving our time in ernest... my how time flies.
Only just yesterday it seems we were hurrying to reach adulthood?
By the way fellows I got a call from one of my close friends and a classmate of ours (Carolyn Silva).
She is doing fine and is in Kona with her younger sister Charlene.
Love all and Aloha.....

Don't forget to attend the KHS Foundation fundraising dinner this evening at the KHS campus.
Tickets can be purchased at the door if you haven't purchased already.
Details on the dinner, entertainment and other info can be found on the link at the bottom of this page.
We haven't forgotten you Sonny !
Didn't notice you were using a different email address.
Thanks Roy and Doug.
Great to hear you are well on the road to recovery Brenda.
Thanks Clarence for the clarification and links from one who would know.
Those were the links that I used to get info to inform Raynor, Carl, Betty and others.
Thanks Raynor, I too was able to locate Roy Kobayashi's name on the Wall on a visit a long time ago.
Strangely, searching and looking as hard as I could, I wasn't able to locate Alan Matsuura's name at the time.
Again apologies on not making clear that Geraldine Okumura Kotake - KHS '60 was the one being referred
to on the obit.
Thanks Betty, for sharing those photos, for visiting the Wall and for my being able to see Alan's name.
Thanks Roger, was able to check that out with the links.

Aloha, classmates!

My, oh my, didn't mean to create a mystery or concern regarding the health challenge I faced last year, which is
behind us pretty much, and I want to assure loving friends that I am doing very well, indeed.

You know, without being religious, I will say that God brought Robert back into my life at the perfect time, and
although breast cancer is scary and the ensuing 3 surgeries were tough, (to say the least,) having this kind,
loving and compassionate man (MD) at my side was a HUGE blessing.
I have helped many in their healing, and it was time for me to receive, by all my clients' feedback.

So I am cancer free, rebuilding strength and energy.
In fact, I am back at hula on Tuesdays, which has helped with my range of motion and also all the laughter and
hugs and love are so healing.
We both put on weight during the period of trips to Loma Linda and staying in hotels and eating out, so we just
joined 24 hour fitness and will be focusing on our health and fitness.
We are also eating very sensibly.

As I told the few friends who have taken the journey with us, .... it was a time of introspection, prayer and quiet.
Sheila and my best friend Kathleen (Costa-Kalani HS, who was also our maid of honor at our wedding,) held
prayer circles, and Kathleen was the one who checked in with Robert and kept Sheila informed of my progress.
Loma Linda was amazing and is a hospital where nurses and staff pray, (Seventh Day Adventist) and the spirit
there is quite holistic.

Then, too, my dear friend is a la'au lapa'au master who now resides on the Big Island, and his advice was to take
his la'au, sent with so much love, pray, spend time in nature, and "get" that I was caregiver for so many in my
lifetime and that it was time to take care of self.
I listened, and miraculously, we were told that there was no need for radiation or chemotherapy.

At any rate, I want to thank beloved friends for their concern, love and support.
In my teaching I always remind students that worrying never helps anything, altho some just love to worry, so it
is wise to choose to not invite that energy in one's direction.
I have my trust and my faith, and my beloved Robert at my side.
Even so, it was at times a roller coaster of emotions, with fear, faith, sadness, tears and pain.
No question, there were many tears, but when I would ask, "what's wrong with me??!!" when I couldn't control
the tears, Robert would say, "nothing is wrong with you, honey, .... tears release toxins and are good.
You should cry, ... it's normal."

Please know we appreciate the caring. I am fine.
And I send healing love to anyone going through a health challenge right now.
Also, I send blessings to those who have lost family and loved ones.
At our age, we appreciate each day and spend them wisely, counting blessings and giving thanks.
My dear aunty Nina used to say, "every morning when I get up, I pinch my okole, and if it hurts, I say, thank you
Father for another day!" ha!

With a big hug, (but not too tight!) I have a lot of mischief to do yet, so brace yourselves for future reunions! ;-)

Brenda

This site < http://www.vvmf.org /> has a searchable data base; don't need the full name.
For all the 277 or so Hawaii men, go to Wall of Faces Advanced Search and enter the state only.
http://www.vvmf.org/Wall-of-Faces/search/results

The bio/memorial for Roy Kobayashi may be found at https://apps.westpointaog.org/Memorials/Article/23861/
or through the West Point Association of Graduates website: https://www.westpointaog.org/memorials.
Another west point site contains eulogies or one may post one; this is the link to Roy's

Hal,
Took time to read all the messages in this group of emails.
I can confirm that Roy Kobayashi died in Vietnam .
I think the jeep he was in ran over a mine.
Saw his name on the Wall.
Also I think it is an "Alan Kotake" in the obit.
Alvin lives with his wife in Pennsylvania.
I will try to confirm.

Hi Hal,

Here are pictures that a friend of mine took for me.
In each one, my finger is pointed to the names of Roy Kobayashi and Alan Matsuura that are on the Vietnam Wall.
I've misplaced the piece of paper that I wrote down where Roy and Alan are located on the Wall.
This was a very moving experience.
Unfortunately, it rained during the time the Wall was here in Sacramento.
There were still a lot of people coming to see the Wall, some looking for names of loved ones, others just curious
to see what it was all about.
Some of the volunteers shared that late at night, Vietnam War veterans would come...they did not want to come
when there were lots of people around...the darkness hiding what a lot of them still deal with as a result of the
time spent "in country".
My husband was discharged from active duty in the Marines before the actual conflict began in Vietnam.

Please feel free to share. http://www.pbase.com/halinhi/vnwall

Aloha,
Betty Chung-Hoon Townsend

Repeating the reminder(s) on the Kaimuki High School Foundation Fundraiser dinner - March 22nd, 4:30P
to 8:30P, on school campus, entertainment by students & alums including Mel Cabang, bonfire.
Though the mail-in registration deadline has apparently passed by, you can still register at the door or call-
contact the Foundation with the info on the following link:
http://www.kaimukihs.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=68182&type=d
Apologies as I neglected to include Geraldine Okumura Kotake's maiden name in the previous email blog.
Yes, as I relayed to Betty Townsend, Roy Kobayashi was Ted's older brother who, as I remembered and confirmed,
passed away in '66 from hostile fire in an ambush in Vietnam while returning from a recon mission.
The other person I mentioned to Betty was Alan Matsuura, Kenneth's younger brother who passed away in '64,
also from hostile fire while on a helicopter mission.
Jean, Brenda recently went through a very trying physical and spiritual time recently.
I'll send you a copy of that portion of the email blog sent out previously.
Lastly, though she was a KHS '61 schoolmate, I'm sure there are a lot of '60 schoolmates who not only remember
her but also knew her, some quite well.
Which is why I thought I really should post this link as she was also a great person and friend.

Hal,

I'm not aware of any of our classmates but Ted Kobayashi's older brother (Roy) who was a West Point grad (62)
and 58 KHS grad paid the ultimate sacrifice in 64 I think.
I would ask you to check with Ted but he is not on your mailing list, but the web site has it dated Jan 66.
I had gotten this information in 1965 from a (WP) classmate of Ted's brother before I was sent to Vietnam the
first time.
I really don't know any of the details, maybe he was injured in 64 and passed in 66 from his injuries.
Anyway, he is Ted's brother and is listed on the "Wall".

Hi Hal: Thanks for the obit on ALVIN KOTAKE's wife.
I wish we knew where to send sympathy cards.
I don't know LORETTA AWELOA's married name, but I do remember her telling me that she didn't want to
come to one of our reunions because she had just lost her husband in the Vietnam War.
I must have missed what happened to Brenda and Robert.

February 28, 2014
Another end of a month when it seems this 2014 year had just started.
Wrote back to Betty that I personally couldn't recall any classmates on that wall, just friends and relatives of... anyone
out there to correct or confirm that ?
Kudos to Betty and her husband for their efforts in honoring our veterans.
Thanks Arline and Tremaine... will see you both and the others there.
Another sad loss of a classmate.
Unfortunately, I can't recall any reunion that she may have attended.
Thus it seems, sadly, that she was unable to enjoy the reunions and we her company before her passing.
