October 31, 2012
Happy Halloween all !
Welcome back Tremaine, we thoroughly enjoyed and thank you for your singing at the banquet.
Hey Gerri, too bad, could have run into you and Jack in LV the day before you left.
Fran and I headed to the E. Coast the Wednesday after the banquet to visit our daughter and her husband.
The weather and conditions then were just great and it's mind-blowing to think of what's happening now.
We got back to LV late Wednesday night the following week to pick up on our flight back home on Thursday.
Actually, as it worked out, the flight was just after midnight and very early Friday morning... just gotta love
these long red-eye flights.
And nope, didn't run into any familiar friendly faces after doing so, at every turn it seemed, the previous week.
Was really stoked to finally make contact with an old gal-pal from high school.
Here's my reply to the email Doris sent, posted further down, after I emailed a copy of the last 'blog' to her...
posting the reply to also repeat the reconnection and memories info for the benefit of other classmates :
------------------------------------------------
Yes I did tell Carolyn of once trying to email you a couple of years or so ago.
I know, I could have written you a letter since I had your mailing address at the time.
But I'm not and never was the type to write plus I don't like to initiate contact for fear of intrusion,
I guess the old Japanese 'enryo' is still ingrained in me... *sigh*.
Then too, I couldn't be sure at the time whether you were still at that address.
I do collaborate with Pearl Shimooka Mori and others on the reunion committee in locating and
compiling the mailing addresses of classmates, but sometimes the list becomes out-dated.
You know, now that I'm slowly remembering those great times some 50+ years ago, you were
one of the first of a few to call me Hal... it stuck after a brother-in-law and some business
associates started calling me that... so a 'Harold' reference lets me, except for a few, pin down
really old friends or business card acquaintances.
All of the classmates appeared to have a great time during the reunion, as did my wife as usual
who enjoyed it even more so after reconnecting with Carolyn and Carlos.
Wasn't able to attend the last couple of reunion committee meetings before this last reunion so
not sure what the plans are for the next reunion, but I do believe they would like to have one
sometime before our 55th class reunion as 2015 may be too far away for some.
There have been though, quite a few mini-reunions at various locations and times.
A couple of those were set up by Gerri Barcenas Digmon to coincide with the annual visit home
by Pamela Machida Halford who lives in Eastern Canada... you can view photos of several of
those mini-reunions on my photo website.
Perhaps Carolyn could set up something similar for when you get back 'home' sometime and
invite a handful or so of your close classmate friends... I'd sure like to be invited also.
The so-called 'blog' - I really don't like that name as it infers 'tech-savvy' which us old fogies,
most of us anyway, really aren't - can be just thought of as a kind of newsletter that's sent
out via email maybe weekly, or more likely every other week.
That frequency depends on how much time I have to put the 'blog' together, but more so on
the email input from classmates which often times is minimal since replies are not required
as this is really just a news letter-paper... but classmate input is the main reason why I've
been putting it together and, very frankly, it wouldn't exist without that input.
You can see 'how it works' by poring over the past newsletter-blogs at this link :
http://www.pbase.com/halinhi/memblogs
Reconnecting can be initiated by reading these newsletters/blogs and visiting the Pbase photo
website, then emailing me with the name(s) of the classmates, who are on the 'blog' recipient
list, that you'd like to reconnect with via email... I can then send your email, with your email
address intact, to those you've named as a request for a reply directly to you.
Keep in mind though that I can't always be sure that email addresses are current or correct.
Convoluted yes... but this avoids displaying contact info in the 'blogs' which I know are being
circulated, and I do encourage this, beyond the classmates on the recipient list.
Classmates will likely also request to contact you after reading our email exchange on the 'blog'.
I finally managed to upload the photos of this October's reunion in LV.
Here's the link :
http://www.pbase.com/halinhi/khs60lv70th
And please do check all the links on the links page :
http://www.pbase.com/halinhi/khs60lv02
I definitely do know what you mean and I do get in the way of myself sometimes too.
So no problem with the timing of the replies and I confess, I do at times take a while to reply also.
Sorry for the long and rambling message... my newsletter-blog replies are usually short and to the
point and Harold is typically the same, but this is Hal and my old gal-pal Doris, plus there was
so much to say.
Aloha and Mahalo for your quick initial reply.
Harold, or Hal
-------------------------------------------

It was my definite pleasure Carolyn, as I hadn't seen you since high school either, coupled with missing the
reunion and you at the Pearl Country Club in April.
Fran was so happy to have been able to reconnect with you and Carlos.
Much Mahalo again for enabling contact with Doris.
And a reminder for you and the rest of the classmates, the photos I took of this past reunion in LV are now
posted on the Pbase website (see the link in my reply to Doris above)... I'll be posting the many photos
that were shot and provided to me by other classmates as soon as time permits.

Aloha Harold etal,
Again, great time to be had by all who attended the 70th LV reunion.
Jack enjoys staying in LV a tad longer then most others, we moved to the Bellagio on Monday and stayed until
the following Thursday.
We were fortunate to bump into our classmates chowing down at the best eating places to see friends and
congregate for a late Sunday afternoon respite upstairs at the California Hotel in the Hawaiian food deli as
well as Sunday breakfasting at the Fremont Hotel Paradise Cafe (delicious Island food).
Such great fun just talking story with old pals.
Did run into Carolyn Eugenio and her husband after the banquet but unfortunately did not get a chance to meet
up later but hope to connect with them later somehow.
Always appreciate your enlightening blogs.

Greetings, my old HS pal whom I remember with such fondness!
Somehow I missed, or might have ignored, the earlier correspondence from you, but of course if the latter,
then it shouldn't be taken personally.
Just busy-ness of life, as tired as that excuse is by now.

Yes, my best pal Carolyn Canubida, whom I've been connected with via e-mail and/or occasional visits I make to
my roots (since 1960) mentioned this last reunion, including you, Hal.
Now I wish I had tried much harder to have attended!!
She had such a blast reconnecting with and meeting our classmates.
When is the next reunion??

I'm such an electronic ignoramus.
The only regular communication made with folks is thru e-mail, cell phone, or landline, unless can meet face-to-
face which is my preferred choice.
I refuse to join Facebook, Twitter, etc.
And depending on extent of blogging, I may be reluctant if more than 2-3 steps involved to make the connection.
Unless you teach me!

I'm definitely interested in reconnecting with you and other classmates we had classes with.
Also many who served on social committees with me/us-------yearbook, prom, plays, etc.
Just tell me how to get going.

Looking forward to any snapshots of the fun reunion.
So good having someone as involved, interested as you who might have initiated this event, following thru with
details to bring it all to fruition, taking pix, and now sharing pix and notes of relevance to all/any interested.
Pls bear with me if I seem to drag my feet between replies.
Sometimes life gets in the way of "life," if you know what I mean.

Thanks for getting in touch after all this time!

Aloha--

Thanks Arline, for the pics of the reunion you emailed to me... and you will be credited.
Anyone have info on Pearl's listed reunions where dates are missing ?
Seeing that list made me realize how many reunions and good times I missed.
Thanks Charlene... always good to catch a glimpse of myself once in a great while : )
So Gerri, how many weeks did you say you and Jack were in LV ? : )
Boy you sure ran into a lot of people before, during and after the banquet.
Thanks Arline for reminding me to post that on the blog... she was tough on me but agree, a great teacher.
Ran into Raynor and Fraunke Tsuneyoshi just after the slot tournament at Main Street Station Casino.
Glad I did as I didn't have a chance to talk again with them at the banquet... hadn't seen Ray since H.S.
Jean, Boyd, we're really disappointed that you both weren't there and sorry and concerned on your situation.
But health and well-being first... please take care and most certainly we'll see you both the next time.
No problem Gerri, it's what I do.
I wasn't able get out an email to Carolyn before leaving for LV but did run into her there.
Wouldn't you know I didn't have your phone number with me at the time... but did relay your message.
Sounds like you all had great fun on the cruise Roy, and then some more when you got back.
That combining of alumni for reunions sounds like a great idea... on a cruise would be even better.
Yes, out of the several billion people in the world, my wife found herself next to Roy on the plane.
Coming home from some family stuff with her brother, she did say she enjoyed the conversation though : )
That's great that you people think and care for Sandy that way.
Happy 70th Birthday to Sandy... and all of us.

========================================

Saturday, was the big day of the much anticipated banquet.
There were nearly a hundred people in attendance, most of them classmates.
Sunday was another round of bumping into classmates and old friends.
Monday the majority of the classmates headed back to wherever home was as my wife and I wound up our
week in LV for our side trip to visit our daughter.
Will be posting more thoughts and memories of this reunion from other classmates in the next blog as they
and you write in.
Coming real soon... pics of this reunion on the Pbase website... keep checking the link at the very top.

The musicians provided by Carolyn Amoy was awesome and the food was delicious.

Good Friends, Old friends, Long Lost Friends & Classmates made talk story through out the evening memorable

Harold and dear fellow classmates, Just returned fm" Lost Wages" and the incredibly fun KHS 70th Birthday
reunion dinner at the California Hotel's Ohana Room and just got the beautiful class photo in the mail.
KUDOS to the hardworking KHS Reunon Committee.
Pearl Mori and Ron Higa did a BANG UP job. Mahalo nui nui.
The perfect size Ohana room, not too large or small it intimately held the buffet dinner party and the especially
tranquilizing soft Hawaiian music by a duo of professional musicians throughout the dinner was simply
outstanding and thoroughly set a delightful ambience that permeated the atmosphere akin to a family style
Hawaiian Luau amid the din of constant infectious chatting, laughter and fun that continued after the dinner
in the lobby area, so much smiles.
The generosity of beautiful fabric leis/green tote bags created by Robert Mito and his mate, authentic looking
pakalana leis from Arline Hirahara Gokan, from Tremaine, the equisite handmade Big Island Hawaiian wood
hair items and other donations which I may have missed.
The beautiful acapella voice of Tremaine and recognition of our Kumu Hula classmate,Pauline Kekahuna.
Jack could not say enough for the great times enjoyed on both golfing days played via the princely generousity
of Richard Seichi's adept hospitality.
As always these gathering for Jack and me and probably many others allowed chance socializing with may
classmates for lunch, dinner, etc.
A relaxing Drive with Cliff and Kim Ching to Boulder Dam & lunch,Sunday breakfast with June, Raynor & Fraunke,
Charlene Mau & spouse, Myron Kekaula, Sam Pang, Cliff and Kim Ching.
Later, lunch w/Doug Okada as well as dinner with Richard Seichi and Doug at the Bellagio.
A long interesting chat with June Yanazawa later joined by Steve, Raynor & Farunke Tsuneyoshi, Arline Gokan &
Noel, Malcolm & Yvonne Ahlo, George Palakiko, Joe Ah Yuen, Bobby & Charlene Matsuda, Herky Loebl, Suave
Andy Nakano stopped by.
Monday had lunch at the renovated Union Hotel in the new Aloha Sushi and Island foods restaurant on the first
floor that should do well Opens at 11a to 11pm) since it is a large restaurant with sit down service dining, a
refrigerator filled with various raw poke, crab & seafood.
The extensive menu of saimin, won ton soup, delicious oxtail soup that Ron Lee liked, Short ribs Doug Okada
enjoyed, malasadas served all day, almost every kind of Hawaiian local food you can imagine.
Running into classmates to sit and personally chat is amazing especially what one learns and how coincidentally
our paths through business etc. have unknowingly crossed with mutual friends etc. as well as the precious
memories of earlier times.
Also spoke with Elsie Tanaka Ayers and Tillie Muraoka Seichi who were dearly missed.
Many more to add but won't bore you further.
We are so thankful for the precious blessings of old friends and family and look forward to many more gatherings
when possible.
Did you read the saying from Jane Seabrook,: As you get older, your secrets are safe with your friends because
they can't remember them either.
Blessings to all and fond aloha.

One of the classmates had just been asking about the whereabouts of our former teachers :
http://obits.staradvertiser.com/2012/10/13/haroldine-c-nunes/

---------------------------------------------------
Well here we are in LV... I arrived early Wednesday morning and the majority from Hawaii arrived in the evening
Small world where the passenger seated in front of me in the mini-shuttle from the airport to the downtown area turned out to be Andy Nakano.
After settling in at the Cal, then grabbing a bite to eat, I ran into a classmate I hadn't met since high school... Carol Fukuji Miyachi.
She was in LV with relatives and had forgotten about the reunion... hopefully she'll be able to drop by the Ohana Room on Sat. evening to say hello to the other classmates.
Thursday, besides a whole lot of classmates I had seen the previous day, I ran into Carl Yasuda.
He had driven up from California, where he was staying with family for a while, to say hello to classmates before having to head back on Friday.
There have been thunderstorms around the Las Vegas area which hopfully haven't messed up any golf/excursion schedules.
Friday the slot tournament had nearly 40 people pecking, pounding and pulverizing the button
After the tournament I ran into Raynor Tsuneyoshi and his wife... he had somehow missed the tournament but said they would be at the banquet.
Another small world when a group of us had a conversation after the tournament... my wife and I; Bobby Matsuda and his wife and Caroyn Eugenio Canubida and her husband.
My wife recognized Carolyn as a former part-time co-worker at the old Everybody's Market back during high school days.
She then remembered Carolyn's husband Carlos as the boyfriend that would give Carolyn an after-work ride home.
Then Bobby's wife Charlene mentions that she and Carolyn were former long time co-workers as well.
To add, Bobby and I have the same cousins as one of the uncles was once married to one of the aunts.
We all, along with Sam Pang, had dinner and a very long, fun conversation together after.

Will be writing a report on the banquet itself later.

Really great running in to all the classmates.
Talk about a trip down memory lane.
What a great class we are a part of
It is nearly 9 PM and we are getting ready to hit the sack.
Just wanted to share with you that on the way back to the Main Street Station we ran into Mel Cabang and his wife.
He was eating a Lappert ice cream cone.
He missed the reunion as he just got back from a big tour putting on shows across the nation and just got back.
Apparently, he has moved to the Las Vegas area.
Still kolohe, though.

Hi everybody: Sorry to say, Boyd and I had to cancel going to the reunion this week.
My right kidney started hurting again several days ago.
I thought it would get better and the pain would go away but it hasn't.
I have to go to the Clinic today and see what the P.A. says.
I went over a year ago because I had a really, really sharp pain that made me yell, "Owee!" even though I was
by myself.
Boyd had had a kidney stone so he suggested that I might have a kidney stone, too.
The P.A. didn't even do a blood test or exam.
She just poo-pooed and told me, "You wear a gun on your right side.
That's why you have that pain."
Well, I haven't worn a gun for over a year now and my kidney still hurts!!!
I guess we will try to stay well and plan for next time.

I'm glad to see Bob's back to his writing again.
Yes, this Alaska cruise was so much better than last year's.
The weather was fantastic.
Meeting with Bob and Cathy, I wouldn't have known both were having medical problems.
Bob did mention he felt like **** in the mornings, but he seemed well to me.
As for Cathy, who is due for two knee replacements, was "running" around the ship and chatting with "everyone".
Hard for me to believe that this woman has bad knees.
I again lost weight on this cruise; only three pounds though.
I liked the portions they served.
I stayed away from the "junk food" and ate "healthy".
There were a lot of overweight people, young and old, and I could see why.
Of course, all the food was free and most were "not healthy".
I wanted to meet with Jean and Boyd for "coffee and talk", but after an 8-hour excursion on a bus, we were bushed.
Jo-Anne was flat out pooped and slept on the way back.
I had a field-day taking pictures and came home with over 2,500 photos and several videos.
I met with Mike (a fellow photo-buff) and his Roosevelt contingent.
I think they have a good plan; an alumni reunion.
Something we could consider.
For Harold, it would save one reunion expense; his or his wife's.
Speaking of Harold, I sat next to his wife on the way back from Seattle.
Long story.
I guess I'm getting old; took longer to recover from this trip.
Spent a few days in Victoria after returning from the cruise to Port Angeles.
I like taking the ferry to Victoria and spending time there.
Victoria is a lovely city and it's people are very nice.
Lots of photo-ops too.
On Friday (4th), we celebrated Sandy's (Ishimoto Yamada) birthday.
She enjoyed the Dobash cake and ginger bouquet.
Later, we all went to Chilli's for lunch.
A fun day with classmates

Carolyn, hope you were able to get the info you needed as I wasn't much help, not having been able to attend the last
couple of reunion committee meetings.
Thanks Sonny... hey, that means a smaller, lighter suitcase if just a toothbrush.
Thanks for the tip on yoga Nuk, I'll have to look into that for my particular set of aches and pains.

Hal

Harold, love to read the stories from our classmates, you are so informative and very much appreciated.
I have been very busy with my elderly mom and stuff.
Did not have the pleasure of knowing Nuk but Jack and I send our thoughts and best wishes for a quick recovery.
Jack also had a triple by-pass surgery so we understand your daunting and slow progress, it has been several years
and Jack is now doing well, golfing swimming walking etc.
Hope we get to meet you at another gathering some day.
Actually there are quite a few of our classmates who have had by-pass surgeries and are now doing well.
Congratulations to Jean and Boyd Worley on their retirement, now their fun can really begin.
That Rosie's Grill sounds SUPER YUMMY, it must be a delicious goldmine of local grinds with a growing following of
hungry customers in Alaska..
To Pearl and Reunion Committee,I will attend the dinner on Saturday and will mail in my check.
There are a couple of classmates who are still unsure about attending the dinner, if the committee feels that there is
anything that should be known let me know.
Sincere thanks to the hardworking reunion committee for their time and effort in arranging this reunion.
Always a great pleasure to reconnect and catch up with our old friends.
Aloha, Gerri Digmon

Hi!

Any last minute details about the reunion in Vegas?
Will there be a place to check in or find information about the activities going on?
This is my first Las Vegas reunion so I'm a little nervous about getting to the right place at the right time! Help!

Subject: Alaskan Cruise

Last August Roy called my wife a few times while I was in the hospital.
Roy did some work and found there weren't any hospitals in the port cities in Alaska we were to visit.
They even discussed that I should cancel my cruise.
However, being that there were no known cause of my stroke, like bleeding or blood clots, there were no reasons not
to go on the Alaskan cruise.
I am on one baby aspirin and Lipitor to help prevent another small stroke.
One week before the cruise I stopped my daily exercise routine because I was getting these surges of light headedness.
I was also feeling very sick when I got up in the mornings.
At worse, I could cancel the cruise at the last minute but I didn't want to disappoint the wife, or Roy.
I was also looking forward to meeting Boyd and Jean.
On the cruise, I didn't see Roy and his girlfriend until the 3rd day of the cruise, and then on the last day of the cruise for
lunch and dinner.
We first ran into them in the Princess theatre at one of the Naturalist's lectures.
I didn't see Mike Wong until the last day of the trip when we all had lunch together.
The wife ran into the various Roosevelt groups.
It really wasn't a 1960 class reunion; it was just a bunch of Roosevelt grads from different year classes on a cruise.
One of the grads is, or knows a travel agent, and gathered a bunch of Roosevelt grads for the Alaskan cruise.
Roy thought I looked fine and normal but I wasn't.
I had a short term memory problem and can get easily confused.
I forgot to bring the contact info for Boyd and Jean, and I forgot to ask Roy for the info, knowing he didn't have time to
see them, even after talking about them.
Roy may have called them that morning when we landed at Skagway but I don't know that.
I felt so sick that morning I didn't leave the ship.
I thought I could have found them even without the contact info.
I attended the Trivia games with the wife which helped to keep my mind off my feeling lousy.
We met and teamed up with a couple loud funny blondes and had a good time.
We won our share of prizes and even gave Roy and his girlfriend a couple tiny LED flashlights.
I got better with each day with Friday being my best day.
Being back home, I do wake up feeling a little sick but no lightheadedness so I'm back to my exercise.
My legs feel weak so I'm not sure if I don't have another problem.
Because of my balance problem the wife got me to sign up for yoga today.
In general, all the people I have talked to, said yoga has helped their backs and their balance.
The wife has a knee problem and I have been on her to get it done as soon as possible since knees never get better on
their own.
It was sunny at each port, something that is unusual, we were told, at this time of the year.
It was foggy going north on the inland passage so we didn't see any northern lights.
There wasn't much calving at the glacier where we stopped, and no cracking sounds; very quiet.
I didn't see any animals.
I didn't want to bring binoculars with us because of the weight so the wife bought one on the ship, and didn't see
anything either.
But I got to carry it home.

September 29, 2012
Just a little more than a couple of weeks before our 70th B'day reunion in LV... having missed the reunion at
the Pearl Country Club this past April, I'm really looking forward to this one.
Vern, like you, I don't touch alchohol... well... except that very occasional glass of wine... OK, make that the
occasional glass of wine or two.
Never drank beer, tasted it and never liked it... last had hard liquor in my twenties... very young twenties.
Even that was very rare for me to do and I stopped completely after one after-work beer bust and pupus with
some work friends.
After consuming... I lost track after a dozen or so... too many water-highs, I told them I had enough and drove
on home... I must have driven 'cause I remember parking my car and walking up to my apartment.
I can tell you, it is a great incentive to stop imbibing when one is embarrassingly humbled by being awakened,
while reeking of alcohol and regurgitated pupus, by one's mother-in-law to provide a ride back to her place
to join the the rest of the family for late dinner... it all worked out OK... she's still my mother-in-law.
Nuk, that's too bad that you all missed each other in Skagway... would have been interesting to be in on the
conversation with all five (or more) of you if you had.
Becky, although the next logical reunion (75th) is quite a ways off, I expect there'll be a lot of mini-reunions
set up soon along the way.
We'll all be looking forward to seeing an even more relaxed Jean and Boyd at the LV reunion now that you're
both retired and seem to be just enjoying life.
