Just a little more than a couple of weeks before our 70th B'day reunion in LV... having missed the reunion at
the Pearl Country Club this past April, I'm really looking forward to this one.
Vern, like you, I don't touch alchohol... well... except that very occasional glass of wine... OK, make that the
occasional glass of wine or two.
Never drank beer, tasted it and never liked it... last had hard liquor in my twenties... very young twenties.
Even that was very rare for me to do and I stopped completely after one after-work beer bust and pupus with
some work friends.
After consuming... I lost track after a dozen or so... too many water-highs, I told them I had enough and drove
on home... I must have driven 'cause I remember parking my car and walking up to my apartment.
I can tell you, it is a great incentive to stop imbibing when one is embarrassingly humbled by being awakened,
while reeking of alcohol and regurgitated pupus, by one's mother-in-law to provide a ride back to her place
to join the the rest of the family for late dinner... it all worked out OK... she's still my mother-in-law.
Nuk, that's too bad that you all missed each other in Skagway... would have been interesting to be in on the
conversation with all five (or more) of you if you had.
Becky, although the next logical reunion (75th) is quite a ways off, I expect there'll be a lot of mini-reunions
set up soon along the way.
We'll all be looking forward to seeing an even more relaxed Jean and Boyd at the LV reunion now that you're
both retired and seem to be just enjoying life.

Thanks, Hal. The info was just in case I wander out of doors.
Once I´m in Vegas I usually stay well ensconced in a casino, but there´s those transit periods when
hotel-casino-restaurant hopping.
Right now it´s in the 50´s here, and comfortable for me.
With your report, I can leave my thermals at home.
PS: Uncle Charlie hasn´t touched alcohol/beer of any sort in 26-years.
Had to quit (1986), or die like a rat!
Rats! All that free hootch I´ll be missing while gambling.
Again, big Mahalo for the wx data.

Funny, I had just checked yesterday for my wife.
For the week we all will be there, the temps are forecast to be in the mid 70s F. during the day.
At night, it's supposed to be around the low 50s... but those lower temps are usually during the very
early morning hours.
Last I checked, only Friday, 10/12, may have a slight chance of precipitation... winds will be very light
throughout.
So, all in all, a very comfortable week and weekend... of course, with my luck that could all change by
then and we'll see snowflakes on Saturday.
But, from the couple or so of Octobers I've been there, light jackets or sweaters have been good enough
at night, and that's just outdoors.
Don't forget, October is Halloween time and it's a super big thing in LV throughout the month with a lot
of indoor-outdoor activities all over town.
And of course, there's the obligatory trek to Hofbrauhaus LV for Oktoberfest... but for you guys, that may
be like us checking out a luau while in LV.

Hola, Hal

Q: Have you any idea what outside temperatures might be like in LV in October?
Should I pack some warm clothing before we leave Deutschland?

Subject: Sorry To Have Missed You In Skagway

Boyd and Jean,

On August 28th Roy forwarded to me your contact information as well as your email to him.
I had fully intended to contact you prior to my leaving home.
I am quite sadden by your Rosie's situation.
I was looking forward to having a lunch there at her restaurant.
I was salivating for a Spam musubi.
On board ship, I heard that Alaska is only 2nd to Hawaii for Spam consumption.
It's good survivor food.
However, I had a small stroke and things sort of unraveled.
Most people won't notice anything wrong with me; which probably means something IS wrong with me,
I'm the only one that hasn't noticed it all my life.
I had to relearn to control my left foot to walk properly.
I still have a balance problem so I have to be careful when standing up or getting on moving things like
escalators as I found out this trip.
I tried to get back to my normal routine but had to stop my walking and biking since I felt attacks of
lightheadedness when I got home; I also felt tiredness, and sick when I first get up in the mornings.
My short term memory is not good.
I do get confused at times.
I forgot to bring your contact information with me.
All I remember was you all live in a green house on 3rd street, which in Skagway, should be easy to find.
Besides, I could just ask any local person about Boyd and Jean, and I'm sure everybody knows where you live.
Not to worry.
However, I got up every morning feeling sick but I managed to get through the day; I felt better by the afternoons.
I had to eat to feel better, but it isn't easy trying to eat when I felt sick.
On Tuesday morning on the cruise, we land in Skagway.
I woke up and felt really sick that morning.
Oh no, I said to myself, this is my Boyd and Jean hunting day.
I knew Roy was on an all day train ride with too little time at the end of the day to see Boyd and Jean.
So it was up to me.
Well, I ate breakfast and I still didn't feel well the rest of the day so I stayed on-board.
So I apologize.
No heroics from me.
A Dutch boy can plug a leak in a dike with a finger and become immortal.
An Asian kid can do the same thing but would get yelled at for causing the leak in the first place.
Such is my life.
Anyway, I was looking forward meeting you all.
I think you might have enjoyed the wife since she is the one with the personality.
I realized I didn't have one, so I married one.
It must be interesting living in Alaska.
Our on-board Naturalist Lecturer was Michael Modzelewski; he was very good; it almost sounded like
he was preaching to us about nature.
It was okay since I feel the same way about nature and human selfishness.
It's worse now though.
I read that young Americans think foods like chicken and beef are made in the back of grocery stores.
That isn't going to help them survive in Alaska.

Hal:

Thanks for all the good work you do.
I enjoy reading everybody's input and look forward to these little snips of info.
I have changed my email address so please change it.
This computer is on its last leg so I now have been brought up-to-date by my sons who bought me a new iPad.
Love reading about what everyone is doing, where they're going to or coming from.
Please make the change in email address so I can continue to see what's going on with this class, and who knows,
I may be able to join you all at one of your lunches/dinners again some day if I happen to be in Honolulu.
Mahalo for keeping me informed. A hui hou!

Have been getting phone calls from various friends down in the lower 48 telling us that their e-mails to us
have been bouncing back because our mailbox is full...or something like that.
Boyd X-ed out and deleted what he could to empty out our e-mail so I hope your messages haven't bounced
back to you.
Pearl, we are planning to go to LV for the 70th Birthday Reunion.
Velma said that she wanted to pay for our banquet admission.
I hope she didn't space out when her own plans for attending had to be cancelled.
She has to go to the Smithsonion the same weekend for a dedication with the Hawaiian Civics Club.
I believe the Smithsonion is moving the statue of King Kamehameha into an atrium because the section where
it's located now has a second floor or something that shouldn't be above the King's head.

Sorrry we didn't get to see Okano or Nukushina yesterday.
Boyd was on a long-distance phone call so he thinks he missed their call in the morning.
He heard a beep for call waiting but couldn't hang up in time.
We hope they had a good tour.
As long as the tour was, we are sure they were pooped when they got back to the ship.
Our friends took us to dinner at 5pm so we weren't home until after their ship left.

I think I have finally recovered from helping my sister, Rosie, with her restaurant "ROSIE'S ALOHA GRILL"
here in Skagway.
She was working from 4:30 am until 8:00pm just about everyday.
I just washed dishes, got stuff and took care of the laundry and the money.
Food deliveries were on Tuesday so anything else that she needed, I got for her because I know the people
and places that have the things that she needed.
I don't recommend opening a restaurant to anyone in their right mind.
It's extremely stressful to prepare food and NOT know IF ANYONE will come in to buy your food.
There were five other new food places that opened.
My sister did the best because the others catered to the general public.
They served the same food that the other 26 eating places in town sell.
Rosie catered to the Hawaii people in town and on the cruise ships and to the Filipino crewmembers.
She also offered free WIFI to get them in and gave a lot of free samples of her cooking during the first couple
of weeks.
The Filipinos were very happy that she was selling "sticky" rice, lumpia, pancit, tilapia and lechon kawali
(pork belly cut into small pieces, fried crispy and topped with chopped onion, tomato and fish sauce).
She also made kim chee, Spam musubi and potato-egg-spaghetti salad.
Her daughter made saimin and had her shave ice machine going.
My sister had to go home on the August 13th ferry so that her 2 grandkids could go back to school.
She said that next time, she's not bringing family because she had to find housing for them and then feed them
three times a day.
She's hiring local.

I'm so-o happy to be retired.
So is Boyd.
What a great feeling to be retired.
Boyd said that I look and act younger.
I feel like a big weight has been taken off my shoulders....no more uniform, no more work schedule, yay!!!

Send in those checks to Pearl for the reunion events ASAP.
I'll assume the show/excursion prices include transportation unless I'm advised otherwise.
Welcome back Robert and Brenda... sounds like you both did have that great adventure you anticipated.
Sorry to hear you won't be LV Mike... but have a great time down under.
OK Roy... geez... and here we thought maybe Jean knew something that we didn't.
Less than four weeks before the reunion in Las Vegas... by then most of us will have gone beyond our sexy sixties and on
to our sizzling seventies.
Here's a link to more tips and info on LV below.
Everything Las Vegas Issue # 799 is now posted here:
http://www.everythinglv.com/forums/content.php?242-Everything-Las-Vegas-Issue-799
I was loaned some more pictures from the Pearl Country Club reunion in April of this year, thanks to Chester Otani.
Not having attended, it was nice to see classmates I haven't seen... since... well... possibly high school... Andrew Anderson,
Avis Gima, Bert Maedo, Carolyn Eugenio, Frances Takasaki, John Rodrigues, Priscilla Young, Raynor Tsuneyoshi, and
Sadie Shishido come to mind.
Although, I did see Frances and Sadie at their Washington Intermediate 1957 Class reunion... along with some new friends
at that reunion who were at the Pearl Country Club reunion... Carol Hajime Kajihiro, Iris Okahashi Takayama, Ruby Choy
Miyao are a trio I recognized in the pictures... great to have that inter-relation with others beyond the KHS '60 class.
Here's the link to those and other pictures of the 2012 Pearl Country Club reunion:
http://www.pbase.com/halinhi/khs60hnl2012
Please let me know if there are any corrections/additions that need to be made to the captions for the IDs and events.
Not having been there, some of what's happening in the pictures has me wondering 'what's happening ?'.

Aloha friends!
Brenda and I just returned from Lake Baikal in Eastern Siberia and had a fantastic time.
Kumu taught and the students were amazing.
Lake Baikal is the largest and deepest lake in the world and contains 20% of all the fresh water on the planet.
It is a very special sacred place.
I went swimming in the lake (Temperature in the water was 50 degrees) but felt very inviting and was a great experience.
The indigenous people are Buryats and are very sweet, peaceful and spiritual people with strong resemblance to the Aleuts.
We have many stories to share when we see you.
Their diet is almost exclusively meat which is eaten raw and frozen.
Horse is a favorite!
Looking forward to LV!

OK Sonny, I've forwarded your email to Muriel, Bobbie and Pearl.
Look forward to seeing you and Terry again.
Thanks Doug for those words, and thanks to Roy for conveying them.
Sonny is lucky to have a great daughter like you Rita, who looks after her Dad like you do.
I know some of us were wondering if our emails were getting through to you Jean.
And you and Boyd also have a great son looking after you too.
As much as I wish I were going along with them, I had not planned on and won't be one of the classmates
going to Alaska and Skagway... will be great seeing you and Boyd in LV though.

Hi Everyone: Sorry, for not answering e-mails, Hal, Roy, Chester and Carol .
Our son bought us a new computer but took it for a month to Juneau to up-grade it and to add easy click
on icons for us.
He said that he might have erased some or most of what we had. We can't tell.
Anyway, good to catch up.
Looking forward to seeing Nuk and his wife this September along with Hal,Roy and their wives.
Nice surprise to see Chester at my sister's restaurant: Rosie's Aloha Grill here in Skagway, Alaska.
Have to go out to clean our pick-up truck.
Boyd is loaning it to the piano tuner and his wife who are arriving in two hours to tune around 14 pianos
in town.
