JULY 2011 POSTS - posts, starting with March 2009, are archived in:

I followed Roy's lead and visited Douglas Yoshimura a few days ago... although basically immobile, he
can't raise his head much less his body by himself, I was amazed at his good spirits... he is very alert,
mentally sharp, has an excellent memory, and was quite happy to be conversing with a classmate.

Pearl, what a small world... I know it happened a while back since Doug hasn't been able to work for
quite some time... I'll pass on your good wishes and anyone else's to Doug when next I shoud visit.

Yes Doug is allowed visitors as I relayed to Edwina and also passed on the location to her... I'll pass on
that information to anyone else who emails me requesting it.

Pam, Sandy of course is Sandra Ishimoto Yamada who is at Maunalani Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Chester Otani and others have had a couple or so get-togethers for Sandy at the center and elsewhere.

Yep Irene, that's exactly what I hoped the blog would be... for classmates to connect and to pass on info.

I do remember you oftentimes inquiring on Doug's whereabouts, Gerri... he is listed as Douglas Yoshimura
at the convalescent center and his shared room is fairly small with little room for much... I brought over
a couple of picture copies of the 2010 reunions but even with those I had to look for space to leave them
on... even the side wall next to his bed is covered with signed photos from friends and visitors.

I'd been wondering if you were busy commuting all over the country again, Raynor... good to see you've
finally 'retired'... well, sorta.

No problem Sheila, I won't remove anyone from the email list unless I receive an indication to do so.
The phone call, if you haven't received it yet, may happen sometime before the next reunion meeting which
will be about a week and a half from now.

Hi Hal,

I was surprised to hear about Douglas Yoshimura being in a convalescent home.
I saw him when he was working at Floors of Hawaii and Hiram had requested for an estimate.
It was quite a surprise to see him when I opened the door to let him in to measure.
I hope he is getting better and wish him well.

Hi Harold,

It's Pam in Canada!!
I would love to visit Douglas when I'm in Hawaii next year.
I only come once a year in January.
I'll make a note of it and will email you then for where to go and visit with him.
Who's the Sandy that Roy talked about?
Thanks for all your help and being the go between.

Hi Hal,

I appreciate you taking time to respond to my email.
Thank you for the input about Doug Yoshimura.
I remember him so well as a talented individual and an easy going guy.
Its always sad to hear about devastating health issues about our classmates, but I'm glad that the blog has
been available with so much information and input from KHS classmates.
I think Roy said it best, " Everyday wasted is one less lived."

Roy, Mahalo for the info, I hope to visit Doug soon, don't know when yet but glad that visiting time is open.
What name is Doug listed under.
What can I take to Doug, let me know what else I can do.
Incidentally, who did Doug run around with in school, let me know if you remember.
Keep well.

Hi Hal,

Is it possible to obtain the mailing address for Doug Yoshimura.
I would like to send him a card to know he is in my thoughts.
If it is not feasible, than I would appreciate his phone number.
Thank you.

Harold and Roy, fantastic to hear that Doug has been located.
Since our reunions started I have inquired from time to time about dear Doug's whereabouts.
Then later heard that Doug was ailing but no one had info on contacting Doug.
I have been very busy w/my Mom however, Harold/Roy, if possible I would love to visit Doug so let me know.

I lost contact after leaving State service over a year ago.
After 16 years of maintaining 2 separate houses I get to hang out with my wife in 1 house.
Was getting used to retirement then an organization called the United States Power Squadrons contacted me
asking if I would consider working for them.
I work around 2/3rds time for them as National Program Director.
Keeps me out of trouble.
Hope the Class of '60 gang is doing okay
I am back in Huntington Beach

Aloha Hal

I would like to remain on your list. I enjoy very much hearing from our former classmates.
I have not received any phone call yet regarding the 70th B-day, but i'm sure i will.
I will keep Doug Yoshimura and his family in my prayers.

For those who participated in the email/online reunion survey, apologies for any perceived repetition when receiving
a phone survey call recently... the participants were anonymous on the email/online survey to the committee, thus
the phone calls.
The reunion committee wanted a little further input from those who haven't yet given their opinions and suggestions
for a 70th birthday reunion in 2012 and also further input from those who have.
If you haven't received a phone survey call yet, the committee is working on it and will eventually be getting to you.

Got word from Amy Nakashima Kashiwai that the registration, for their Washington Intermediate School reunion that
will be held on August 13, went very well... with guests included, should be around 80 or so attending this very first
Class of 1957 reunion... phenomenal numbers after 54 years.

The two posts below from Roy are on his visit after he inquired on Doug's whereabouts.
I merely responded with what I only believed to be correct info.
Roy took it upon himself to actually call and visit Doug... shows what a caring person Roy is.
Douglas Yoshimura is at a convalescent facility but I've thought it best not to post which one on the blog... as Roy noted
below, there isn't much room for too many people at once so an individual or two might be best.
Anyone wishing to visit Doug let me know and I'll pass on the location and phone number to use to call ahead.
Doug, as you might remember from high school, was another one of 'our Elvis' classmates.

I don't think that larger groups would be feasible although he told me that some students from the Baptist Academy
do visit and sing for him.
His room is small and has two other patients.
Also, alarms are constantly ringing; 24/7 I am told.
Doug said "you get used to it".
Doug is bed-bound and with a trachea tube.
He cannot leave the bed.
He is not on any kind of restricted diet, but is conscious of his caloric intake.
We cannot have a luncheon for him like we do for Sandy.

The blog is a wonderful tool for communication.
It helped open doors to classmates.

I went to visit Douglas today and we chatted for about 2 hours.
He is bed-ridden and has a trachea-tube.
He can still talk and he told me about his life.
He is still upbeat and positive about life.
He is not the Douglas we knew in high school and thereafter; fast cars, motorcycles, boats, skiing, etc.
I asked if he would mind if other classmates came to visit him and he said it would be fine, but to call ahead.
It was nice to be able to talk to a classmate I hadn't seen since high school and talk like it was only yesterday.
When I see people like Doug and Sandy, it makes me appreciate my own life and well-being.

I've received a request from the WIS '57 reunion committee to remind their classmates on the reunion and to register
by the July 15 deadline if they haven't done so.
Here are the links to the newsletter and registration form, both downloadable and/or printable from the site :

https://docs.google.com/viewer
( newsletter and registration form in pdf format )

https://docs.google.com/document
( registration form in doc format )

I understand there will be over 60 WIS '57 classmates, with around a dozen and a half of them also being our KHS '60
classmates... plus their guests.
That's quite an impressive turnout for a first time reunion... most especially after 54 years.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seeing the WIS '57 folks having their reunion, the thought again came to mind... 2012 will be the 55th year since the
class of 1957 left Kaimuki Intermediate School.
Perhaps we could combine our 70th birthday celebration reunion with a KIS '57 55th year reunion.
I know there are a few of our KIS classmates who went on to other schools and are reluctant to attend our KHS reunions,
feeling that they were no longer a part of the class... even though there already have been several precedents to that
of former KIS classmates attending and being quite welcomed to our KHS reunions... perhaps a combined event like
a KIS - KHS reunion would help to change their mind... once a classmate, always a classmate... comments anyone ?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The KHS '60 reunion committe would still like to hear from the rest of the classmates who may not have responded to the
recent informal email survey... below is an approximate percentage breakdown of votes from those who have :

Mahalo to those who have submitted their thoughts on the previous survey, but the committee also needs the
input from the rest of the classmates.

preferences :

to do the same.
