JANUARY 2011 POSTS - posts, starting with March 2009, are archived in:

I wrote back to Susan Ham as soon as I read the sad news :
Yes, the email does go out to a hundred or so KHS 1960 classmates.
I realize how difficult it must have been with your Mom's passing, yet taking the time to write.
Thank you, it is much appreciated.
Will definitely post your email to inform her classmates on the next email.
I remember your Mom as a friendly gal who was always real nice to me in school.
Your Aunt Carol is my wife's classmate and she would update me on your Mom whenever I talked to her at their reunions.
Sadly, I didn't have the opportunity to chat with her at our last reunion at the Pearl Country Club.
Thank you again and take care.
I did recognize Verna after the reunion while looking through the pictures I had taken.
Now I'm doubly sorry I didn't recognize her then and have the chance to chat.
Thanks Chester... as I've mentioned before, I'll normally post only what's relevant to the classmates...
be it KHS, the old stomping grounds, the good times, etc... being seniors and saving certainly qualifies.
( I also received the list from Ken Morimoto shortly after... Mahalo Ken )
Happy New Year Seda.
Figured you were really busy as usual Gerri

Hi my name is Susan Ham, I am Verna (Chang) Martin's daughter.
I am guessing this is an email string of Kaimuki class of 1960.
I wanted to inform you and hope that you can then inform others that need to know that sadly my mother
passed on January 15, 2011.
She had a stroke while traveling and died of complications caused by the stroke.
We are having a 'Celebration of Life' gathering in her honor on Saturday Feb 5th from 1-4pm at Hawthorne
Pacific Corp, formerly Pacific Machinery, where she worked for 46 years before retiring.
Thank you.

Dear Jean,

Thank you so much for your wonderful email!
I was wondering if you received the package, whether it was lost or not.
I could not be happier with your response.
It truly makes my heart happy to hear that you like my work and that your gifts were so well received.
The reunion was fun but did not get to spend quality time with people like you, maybe at the next reunion.
Happy New Year to all of you.

Aloha Harold, Pam, etal.
Happy to hear, Pam, that you are on your way,
I have been sooooooo busy my daughters from San Francisco spent the Holidays here, Kim from London
stayed for 2 weeks, celebrated 2 birthdays plus running around.
Whew, found out I need to get in better shape.
Pam got your schedule and will get back to you, haven't seen you since.........what is it.... the reunion....
high school, have you kept in touch with your school buddies, let me know.
Jean, Gerald Morihara has been a buddy of mine since elementary even though he attended Iolani and yes,
I occasionally run into Gerald since Gerald lives above me on Waialae nui ridge but he keeps busy with
Stephanie and travels quite a bit,
And as for the girls as far as I am concerned the girls are anyone below 100 but ladies will also do.
Jean, why are u worried about your hair, you look just fine to me and Jack.
Have not caught up with the 100's of emails received since I only now have actually took time to read them.
Will be in touch.
Aloha all. Gerri DB

January 22, 2011
Hi Amy, welcome to the email list.
Jean, have Roy on the email list but nothing for Gerald... maybe someone can steer him over.
Pamela, forwarded your email directly to Gerri (since you indicated an inclination to do so yourself and
figured it was OK to do so), but haven't heard from her yet... understand she sometimes is unable to
get to her email in a timely manner.

Yay! Nice to hear from Andrew Nakano.
Happy to hear you started on your Bucket List.
Hope to hear from my cousin, Roy Takamatsu and maybe Gerald Morihara who volunteered to be Best Man
at our wedding many years ago in 1964.
Want to send mahalo nui loa to the one and only Seda.
I told you at the reunion in Las Vegas that you didn't have to send me a second brocade purse just because
I gave you the rolls of obi material.
You did me a favor by taking them and I really appreciated the beautiful purse you sent the first time.
You insisted that you wanted to send me one made from the material I sent because the material was really
nice once you rolled it out.
I told you, "It's okay. Don't bother. You don't need to do that."
Well, you disobeyed me and went ahead and sent the second brocade purse to me.
Boy! was I glad you disobeyed me!
Holy cow, is it beautiful!
No wonder you were so excited when you talked about the fabric.
It's gorgeous!
Even the button you chose is beautiful.
I would never have known what a treasure you wanted me to have if you went and obeyed me.
The girls that we bought purses for loved the bigger was the pink with origami birds.
She said that she likes to carry her i-phone, credit card, keys and sometimes her Kindle to exercise at the
Rec. Center so that size is great.
The girls are age 32 and 35 Customs Officers.
Anyone younger than 68 is a girl to me.
Took Nukushina's advice and checked on our Vitamin D.
I think our whole town is on Vitamin D twice a day.
I also checked on my ZINC because my hair keeps falling out.
70 is low and I was at 63 so I'm taking that twice a day, too.
( don't think my hairpiece will cover my whole head.)

Hi Hal,

Got my reservations made - I'll be in Hawaii Feb. 5 to March 12.
Should I email Gerri for our get together?
I guess she'll get it from you here?
Have a family get together on Feb. 20 and another get together on March 5.
Otherwise I'm wide open.
Hope to see you folks.

Hope all of you had a great start to a new year... just got back from the 9th Hawaiian Island and had a great
beginning to my new year.
Had a blast checking out the new toys at the Consumer Electronics Show, despite the approximately 140,000
attendees and 2,700 exhibitors creating a dizzying array of sights, sounds and to some extent in the often
great crush of crowds, fragances... all in all, as usual, a fantastic show.
Saw a few of our classmates while in LV... Lance Ishihiro, Amy Morioka Ishiara and Carol Fukuji Miyachi, she
looked really familiar at the time but didn't realize it was her until getting back home... my wife ran into a
few of her KHS '61 classmates also... Linda Hashiba Sakaue, Jean Fujii Wyss and Glenn Nakajo... really true
that you can sometimes bump into a lot more familiar faces in LV than at home, wherever that may be.
And the same good wishes to you Douglas or Samuel or General or whatever your other names are.
Thanks for the info Mike and Happy New Year... sorry I can't display all of that info in your email as per my usual
policy of not having anything of a commercial nature posted except for brief details and only if there is a clear
connection to the KHS class of '60 or is of common interest to them.
Hey Andy... yes, there were a lot of inquiries as to your whereabouts at the reunions... now we know... and as
for contributing... you just did... thanks for writing and Happy New Year to you and yours too.
Thanks for the great sentiments that you share as always, Gerri... best wishes to you and Jack too.

Happy New Year, Hal!

I am bummed that I could not attend the last two reunions due to travel conflicts.
I was in Scottsdale when we had the PCC dinner and in Hokkaido when the Las Vegas event was held.
Since our retirement two years ago, my wife feels that we should see the places on our "bucket lists".
We are hampered somewhat by our "budget restraints" but try to visit a new place at least once a year.
I will try my darnest to be at the 70th next year.

I do read your blog regularly and chuckle to myself when reading funny, meaningful items.
Sorry for not contributing to the blog as I am not a good writer of stories.

Really good news Pearl, know there were a lot of classmates waiting for this.
All the same to you, Seda, Gerri, Jack and Paul.
Well, it's been one heck of a 50th year for the KHS class of '60... starting with the carry-over of reunion committee
meetings from last year... the April golf, bus tour activities... the terrific Pearl Country Club banquet... the many
mini-gatherings at Zippy's, Kincaid's, Hale Koa, Maunalani Nursing Home, Tsukiji's, etc... the October LV golf,
shopping, touring, stage show activities and planned/impromptu mini-gatherings... and of course, what could
be considered the grand finale for our 50th, the fab-u-lous luncheon at Main Street.
It has been a great year for the KHS '60 family with renewing, solidifying, and even initiating friendships... yet we
didn't forget the sadness for the loss this year of many, with the reminders of others previously lost... thoughts
and fond wishes were also expressed to the many others who weren't able to be with us for whatever reason.
Though our 50th has come and will soon be gone, we still have many years and reunions ahead of us... our 70th
birthday celebration, for one, will be here sooner than later.
With that outlook, we bid a heartfelt fond farewell to our 50th year and welcome in a most HAPPY NEW YEAR !
